Another Cubs Blog:
Perhaps you've all seen Phil Rogers' article from yesterday. If not, check it out. Rogers claims the Cubs could have interest in Manny Ramirez. This was purely speculative on his part and that's what makes it so fun. We all love offseason speculation and to dream of the Cubs signing every single free agent we'd want and trading for the best players in the game. Sooner or later reality sets in and we realize that actual baseball is not like fantasy baseball.
Phil Rogers is an interesting character. Never the brightest man in the room, Rogers has provided us with unintentional humor for years. His latest attempt at real-life general managing is a fun read. Rogers says the Cubs interest in Manny Ramirez would depend on the Cubs trading someone like Soriano or Ramirez to the Dodgers who would obviously need a replacement for Manny were they not to re-sign him. The funny part is that Rogers even mentions that Soriano is owed about $100 million over the next 6 years. What does Manny want?
Well, Scott Boras thinks it's reasonable to suggest Manny is worth 6 years and $150 million. That's an absurd figure and one Manny will not reach, but he's sure to get something along the lines of a 4/80 or 5/100 deal this winter. So, to sum up Rogers brilliant idea: Soriano and $100 million worth of contracts to the Dodgers, Cubs sign Manny for $100 million.
Are the Dodgers that stupid? Do they not realize that $100 million to Soriano is the same as $100 million to Manny? Obviously Phil Rogers doesn't, and it's not like Ned Colletti is a brilliant man, but even he is not so stupid as to not see the absurdity in that.
As much as I'd like to see the Cubs go after Manny, it's just not going to happen. No team is going to trade for Soriano when they can sign a better player for about the same money. You could put Soriano or Manny in LF with Fukudome playing CF and RF and you'd still be an improved team if you could acquire Manny, but that's not going to happen.
The same goes for Jake Peavy as well. Obviously you'd like to acquire him if you could, but it's just not a top priority for this organization to go out and acquire another ace. If it was, why not just sign Sabbathia and save the prospects you'd send San Diego?
There are a lot of options out there for the Cubs as they try to improve the team, but the Cubs just aren't likely to acquire a superstar caliber player. I'd guess the best player the Cubs acquire this offseason is someone like JD Drew. Then it actually becomes worthwhile to have Fukudome on the roster for the 50 games you know he'd need to play as Drew sits on the DL.
