Here’s an interesting read from Doug Miller of MLB.com in which he discusses long toss — throwing a baseball from extended distances with varying arcs — and whether or not it’s a practice that can benefit or hurt pitchers.
Miller notes that the Yankees are one of several teams that have incorporated some form of long toss into their pitching program, although we aren’t told much beyond that (we often hear about pitchers on the mend — Andy Pettitte is a recent example — participating in long toss to develop arm strength). Other teams appear to be more wary of the activity, believing that it could hinder long-term arm health and work against a pitcher’s mechanics. Definitely check out Miller’s piece for more on what I previously viewed as a normal and innocuous exercise.
