MILWAUKEE Nyjer Morgan picked up right where heleft off last season, at least off the field.
The Brewers' fun-loving outfielder was the rock star of the team's annual OnDeck festival, stirring fans into a frenzy as he approached a small stage tosign autographs. As soon as Morgan emerged, flashes from cameras in the crowdbegan going off in bunches. Morgan, better known by his preferred alter-egoname of Tony Plush, soaked it all in as he posed for pictures while makingcrazy facial expressions.
He didn't stop there. Morgan later joined the media for his first interactionwith Milwaukee reporters since the Brewers' postseason departure inmid-October, and he was on top of his game. At one point, Morgan even startedsinging Bon Jovi's "You Give Love a Bad Name."
However, the 31-year old seems to be considering the possibility of toning downhis behavior for the upcoming season.
"I guess maybe I'll be a little more professional," Morgan said usinga mocking tone, seeming to feign sincerity. "I'll clean it up, Iguess."
Perhaps Morgan's haircut lined up well his new attitude. It was a veryprofessional-looking style in front, but buzzed down into two arrows on eachside in the back of his head.
"That's the business side, but we've still got the party side,"Morgan said as he turned around and began cackling. "It's my new thing for2012."
Morgan became far more than just a two-personality player last season, creatingseveral additional alter-egos. In addition to Plush, he added Tony Clutch forhis game-winning moments, Tony Tombstone when the team donned western gear fora road trip and Tony Hush for when his Plush character got him into a littletrouble and he had to keep quiet for a while.
But there are two new ones that Morgan has added to his collection thisoffseason.
"Plush went to Hawaii, so I was Tony Islands for a little bit,"Morgan said. "Then I was Tony RedCarpet, because I was at a"Twilight" premiere event."
Morgan did, in fact, attend the premiere of the ultra-popular movie saga, evenbeing photographed on the red carpet alongside one of the movie's stars, TaylorLautner. But it seems like Morgan isn't too sure who that is.
"Who is it, like Taylor Lockhart or something?" Morgan rhetoricallyasked. "He kind of photo-bombed me, so I just want to put that on therecord. He photo-bombed the kid."
Morgan sent out a picture from his Twitter account that made its way quicklyaround the Internet, but the photograph suggests that Morgan may have the storybackwards about who did the photo-bombing.
Morgan didn't really enjoy the movie, anyway.
"It was alright," he said. "It will be my last one I everattend."
Morgan's offseason was otherwise fairly uneventful, by his standards.
"Besides that, I was easy breezy, just hanging out," Morgan said."I was here, I was there, I was everywhere."
Morgan was acquired by Milwaukee just prior to the 2011 season, and he hadnever played for a contender before in his previous two stops in Washington andPittsburgh. Despite having his best season with a .304 batting average and .357on-base percentage, there were times that his antics became a bit much for ateam that won 96 games and the National League Central Division.Morgan credited relief pitcher LaTroy Hawkins with keepinghim out of additional trouble, but he didn't seem too worried that Hawkins isnow with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
"There's always somebody that can keep me in line, but I think I'm alittle older now that I think I understand what I have to do, and don't burnany bridges," Morgan said. "The Hawk -- that was my guy. I'll stillbe calling him and he'll be letting me know about certain things and how toapproach things."
Morgan certainly approached the On Deck event with the right attitude. Withformer Brewers slugger Prince Fielder signing with the Detroit Tigers last weekand NL MVP Ryan Braun not attending due to his ongoing appeal over a failedtest for a banned substance, Morgan was the most sought-after autograph fromfans.
When told he had the longest autograph line, Morgan responded, "Nah, notme. Little 'ol me? Nah, couldn't be."
While Morgan certainly gave the fans everything that they expected, he wasn'tready to call it PlushFest quite yet.
"This is basically my thank you to them, being able to meet them, beingable to interact with them, being able to shake hands," Morgan said."They're out there cheering you on and spilling their guts out for you, sothis is just a little thing I can do, just shake hands with the Brewerfaithful."
