The Toronto Blue Jays’ 2013 season didn’t take off quite how the team and its ardent supporters hoped it would, as the new look Jays fell to the Cleveland Indians 4-1 before a sellout crowd of 48,857 at the Rogers Centre. While reigning NL Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey didn’t pitch poorly, he wasn’t great either, giving up four runs (three earned) in six innings of work, while striking out four and walking four. He didn’t get much help from battery mate J.P. Arencibia, who allowed three passed balls, two of which led to the Indians first pair of runs in the 2nd inning. While the product on the field wasn’t quite up to snuff (chin up Jays fans, there’s still 161 games left), there were plenty of quality highlights to be found in the stands, two of which are presented here in GIF format, meaning that they will live forever (or until this blog gets shut down…whatever comes first). In the top of the 1st, Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis whiffed at a Dickey knuckleball, losing the grip on his bat in the process. The projectile flew several rows up into the stands, where it was caught by an obviously deranged fan, who bore a striking resemblance to Andy Warhol. The fan eventually returned Kipnis’ bat, but not before he waved it around like an absolute psycho, or how Warhol might have reacted to an unfavorable review of his art (GIF via MLBGifs)… “I’LL GIVE YOU MY BAT WHEN YOU PRY IT OUT OF MY COLD, DEAD HANDS!” Then there’s this jewel, taken when the SportsNet cameras panned the seats in the 7th inning, and came across a group of fans in the “enthusiastic Opening Night crowd,” as described by Jays announcer Buck Martinez, with none more enthusiastic than these two dudes pantomiming a handjob. Yeah, you read that right (GIF via Drunk Jays Fan)… That is so wrong, especially seated next to that nice, old lady, and yet so awfully right.
