Found July 29, 2013 on Mets Merized Online:
Ah, the trading deadline; my favorite time of year. It’s the midseason plot point where words like “blockbuster” are thrown around like clothes in a dryer and can change the fate of any team. I don’t think a blockbuster is in the Mets’ near future. I do believe there are trades that can be made if Sandy Alderson decides to lift his backside from his chair and pull his hands out. One idea I’ve been pondering is trading Marlon Byrd for Texas Rangers reliever Joe Nathan. Nathan, 38, has been reported on the trade block for the last few days now. In 44 games for the Rangers this season, he’s 1-1 with a 1.73 ERA, 0.84 WHIP, 44 strike outs and 11 walks. It’s also been reported that the Rangers are looking for another right-handed power bat in the lineup. That’s been made all too obvious by their recent admissions that they would actually play Manny Ramirez. I’d like to think that Byrd is a step up for the Rangers from Ramirez. Byrd also has some experience playing in Texas. He spent some ...

The word on Marlon Byrd and the trade deadline

Marlon Byrd is having a World Class season.  He’s currently hitting .280/.324/.508 with 17 HRs and 60 RBI on the year.  He’s also due a pittance of a salary and holds no commitment beyond 2013.  All of these things SHOULD make Byrd a highly sought after player at the trade deadline.  Except for the fact that the Mets don’t want to trade him. Logic dictates that Byrd has...

Pirates Believed to be Interested in Marlon Byrd

Joel Sherman of the NY Post reports that the Mets are starting to get interest in Marlon Byrd, and that the Pirates are believed to be one of the interested teams. #Mets suddenly are some hits on Byrd, have made counteroffers, will see if anyone budges. #Pirates believed 1 of interested teams. — Joel Sherman (@Joelsherman1) July 31, 2013 The Pirates are believed to be interested...

Tigers had discussions with Rangers for Joe Nathan

Earlier today reports began circulating that the Texas Rangers would entertain offers for closer Joe Nathan. While the idea of a team fighting for a playoff spot trading away its ninth inning guy seems like a stretch the Rangers have engaged in talks with the Detroit Tigers. FOX Sports’ Jon Morosi reports that the Tigers and Rangers spoke about Nathan this weekend. While a trade...

Best Thing For Mets Is To Stand Pat And Win As Many Games As Possible

With the trade deadline set to expire at 4:00 PM today, columnist Joel Sherman reports that one Mets official described interest in any of their as nibbles. One Mets official described “nibbles” on players, but nothing more serious. And the Mets have decided if they cannot obtain something they feel strongly about for their future, then why trade Marlon Byrd or Bobby Parnell...

Not dealing Byrd, Parnell just to trade

Seeking a rummage-sale bargain? Don’t bother calling the Mets. Despite the team’s slow start to the second half Mets brass still intends to hold onto player assets beyond tomorrow’s non-waiver trading deadline organizational sources said yesterday. That means unless the Mets are “blown away” by an offer Marlon Byrd and Bobby Parnell specifically will remain with the team...

Rangers might trade Joe Nathan

Teams in need of a closer soon may have a stunning new possibility to consider. The Texas Rangers have had internal discussions about trading All-Star right-hander Joe Nathan, according to major-league sources.

Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers have 'talked' about trade involving All-Star closer Joe Nathan

As part of his to-do list Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski has talked to nearly every club these past few weeks to get a better handle on who's available with the trade deadline looming. The Texas Rangers were among the teams he spoke with. And according to FOX Sports' Jon Paul Morosi closer Joe Nathan was discussed. Morosi reported late Sunday that the two clubs have...

METS AT MARLINS Jenrry Mejia (1-0, 0.00) vs Henderson Alvarez (1-1, 2.64) *** I’m collecting on a few bets I made a few weeks ago that Marlon Byrd and Bobby Parnell would be with the Mets on August 1st. Rangers Think About Buying While Selling

Here’s one reason you wouldn’t think the Rangers would consider trading closer Joe Nathan: they’re only a game and a half out of the second American League wild-card slot, despite a current team-wide slump. Plus, their division isn’t entirely out of reach. Here’s a second reason you wouldn’t think the Rangers would consider trading Nathan: just a short while ago, they...

Thoughts on Sandy’s Conference Call and the Trade Deadline

Here is a summary of what Sandy Alderson had to say during his conference call that concluded a short while ago. He did not make any moves today because the players that will help the Mets win this season still have a certain value to the team and that the return on trading those players did not reflect that same value. He basically reiterated what I have been saying all along particularly...

Rangers rumors: Closer Joe Nathan available for trade

Have the Texas Rangers given up on 2013? They have fallen to five game out of the American League West division title race, but they are only 1.5 games out of the second A.L. Wild Card spot. Still, though, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, teams looking for a closer may have what Rosenthal calls "a stunning new possibility to consider." Rosenthal reports that...

Chad Qualls Fist Pump Fail Video

In case you missed it, here it is… Miami Marlins reliever Chad Qualls squeaked out of trouble in the eighth inning of tonight’s game against the Mets. After allowing a leadoff triple to Marlon Byrd, he struck out Ike Davis, got John Buck to ground out, and then struck out Omar Quintanilla on three pitches to strand Byrd and end the inning with the game tied 2-2. For Qualls it...

Rangers might trade Joe Nathan

Normally you don’t think of a team in the middle of a pennant race as a seller but the Texas Rangers may do just that, sell some pieces. With so many contenders in need of a closer the Rangers are considering trading Joe Nathan. Out of all the contenders the Rangers are the only ones with deep enough bullpen to think of making a move like this. The Texas Rangers have had internal...

Fantasy Baseball Dingers and Stingers: July 31

Update from last week: Desmond Jennings has cooled off, but he should still be counted on for power and speed. The Rays lineup has improved ever since Wil Myers got called up and should score more runs. Marlon Byrd continues to stay hot in July. He has five homers and 19 RBI. The Mets may trade him at the deadline, but even if that happens, it should only help his fantasy situation...
