Spring Training may already be here, but technically it's still the off season. With that in mind, let me throw something at you based on an article I read yesterday after the Angels signed Bobby Abreu.
The Angels are apparently willing to move outfielders Juan Rivera and Gary Matthews due to a log jam that was created by the Abreu signing. They also are looking for some more offense from their backup catcher. Last year they unsuccessfully used Jeff Mathis in that role and were looking to upgrade, but it wasn't a top priority.
While I have zero interest in Matthews, I believe Juan Rivera would give the Mets a solid right handed bat to use in an outfield rotation with Church, or off the bench.
Last season in 256 at-bats, Rivera hit .246 while smacking 12 homers and driving in 45 runners. The 30 year old outfielder has a reputation for being a clutch bat and is a career .286 hitter. In his last season as an everyday player, he hit 23 homers while batting .310 in 2006.
