This would be a salary move for both teams. Burrell is owed $27 million over the next two seasons and because of health problems (foot) would likely move to first base, a glaring hole for the Giants. Benitez is owed $7.6 million next year and would give the Phillies another arm in the pen. I don't know if this is anything but speculation at this point, but on paper it makes sense for both teams.

  • As a Giants fan, I can only pray this happens. But, it certainly doesn't make sense for the Phils on paper or in the field.

Benitez can't pitch in the majors anymore.

Burrill is mediocre and streaky but he can still jack 20 each year.
  • If I understand this situation correctly, the Phillies are concerned that Burrell won't be able to play left field effectively with his chronic foot problems. Since they have Ryan Howard, they don't have the option of moving Burrell to first base. The Giants do. Burrell will be a below average left fielder, plus playing there could make him more of a injury risk. Basically, the Phillies are dumping his salary. They'll take what they can get and roll that money into a free agent.
