A couple of interesting moves around baseball on Saturday. Let us start with the one that requires a little less energy then get to the one that seems intriguing;Phillies re-sign SS Jimmy Rollins for three yearsThere did not seem to be much of a market out there for Rollins so I think he did well to land the deal he did. Rollins at his best is not the caliber of player that a Jose Reyes is and at 33 in 2012 is aging. At the same time he is too good to really expect to ink a one year deal to.That left him in a bit of a pickle. The Phils stepped in and got him done and I think in the end they will be pleased. Rollins is not great, but he is good. Save for 2010 he has been quite durable in his career and while he is not the 155+ game player he was he still spends little time out of the lineup.Defensively Rollins remains good. He has a terrific arm and covers a solid amount of range. He also seems to be a guy who fits well in Philadelphia. Rollins is a bit brash and plays wit...

San Diego Padres 2012 Top Prospects #3 Anthony Rizzo
We are proud to announce The San Diego Padres Top 30 Prospects for 2012. Peter Friberg has been studying minor league and amateur baseball players for nearly 10 years and has been writing about Padres minor leaguers for approximately eight. Peter has compiled his top 30 prospects in the Padres system for 2012, we are now into the top 10, continuing with #3 Anthony Rizzo. It...
Cincinnati Reds' Off Season Snooze-Fest
After winning the National League Central Division in 2010, the Cincinnati Reds were never a factor in 2011. Pitching woes crippled the team and they could never muster a winning streak. They were below .500 in the first half, below .500 in the second half, below .500 in one-run games and woeful in interleague play. Teams in their division have been active this off season. The Cardinals...
Reds Acquire Mat Latos from Padres for Yonder Alonso & Edinson Volquez
The Reds traded Yonder Alonso, Edinson Volquez, and former 1st round picks Yasmani Grandal and Brad Boxberger for Mat Latos this afternoon.
Can you tell we’re less than thrilled?
There are two ways to look at this trade. One is that basically in return for Josh Hamilton, we have now just Latos to show for it. We also threw in Yonder Alonso and two promising first round prospects...
Putting the Latos Trade in Perspective
by: Will Hicks

I was anticipating a pretty boring day today. I was going to clean and pack my apartment as I prepare to move and watch the UofL basketball game. As part of my morning routine I checked Twitter just to see what was going on. As I read Yonder Alonso’s tweet "Time to close this book and begin another....sad but happy at the same...
Padres Get Short- And Long-Term Help For Latos
The Reds and Padres swung a mini-blockbuster today, with Mat Latos heading to Cincinnati in exchange for four players: first baseman Yonder Alonso, catcher Yasmani Grandal, and right-handers Edinson Volquez and Brad Boxberger. Volquez has been around a while, and Baseball America recently ranking Alonso, Grandal, and Boxberger as the Reds third, fourth, and tenth best prospects,...
Dusty Gets A New Arm To Wear Down
On this dreary snoozy December day, Walt Jocketty got his wish and made a splash for the Cincinnati Reds in the offseason. In return for four years of Mat Latos, the Reds sent the San Diego Padres Edinson Volquez, Yonder Alonso, Yasmani Grandal and Brad Boxberger.
This seems like one of those rare trades where it makes sense from both sides. For the Reds, four years of control...
Reds get Mat Latos from Padres in five-player deal

Comparing Michael Pineda and Mat Latos
The San Diego Padres made a drastic change to the face of their team over the weekend by trading troubled but talented 24-year-old right-hander Mat Latos to the Cincinnati Reds for a package of prospects that they hope will help their team -- specifically the light-hitting offense -- in the future. Should the Mariners go the same route with their young right-hander, Michael Pineda?
Steal of the Offseason: Latos Traded to Cincinnati
The San Diego Padres are an incomplete team. They’ve lost Heath Bell, Mike Adams and Adrian Gonzalez all within the last year and lack the start power to remain anything but an after-thought in an already weak NL West. Their General Manager left the first chance he had for Chicago, and their minor league system wasn’t blossoming with young talent in the same way that other...
Padres Trade Mat Latos to the Reds
Ken Rosenthal of Foxsports.com is reporting via twitter that Mat Latos has been traded the Cincinnati Reds for prospects. Details coming.
Reds acquire RHP Latos from Padres (AP)
The Reds have acquired right-handed starter Mat Latos from San Diego for a package of four players, including infielder Yonder Alonso and right-handed starter Edinson Volquez. Cincinnati wanted a front-of-the-rotation starter heading into free agency. The 23-year-old Latos went 9-14 with a 3.47 ERA for the Padres last season, finishing among the NL leaders in ERA and strikeouts.
Mat Latos Trade Opens Opportunity for Mariners
Back in June, I wrote a piece suggesting that the Mariners should trade Michael Pineda to Cincinnati for a package of players built around first baseman Yonder Alonso and catcher Yasmani Grandal. Well, today, the Reds made the deal I suggested for perhaps the most similar pitcher in the sport (in terms of results) to Pineda, landing RHP Mat Latos from San Diego in exchange for those...
