Trey Ball is fresh out of high school, but that doesn’t mean that the Red Sox don’t have high hopes for their first-round draft pick.
Ball immediately reported to Gulf Coast League Red Sox in Fort Myers after the 2013 draft to begin his long journey toward the majors. Ball was the top left handed pitching prospect in the 2013 draft class and was named the Gatorade Indiana Baseball Player of the Year after a senior season in which he went 6-0 with a 0.76 ERA, 93 strikeouts and 13 walks in 46 innings.
Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said Ball has great athleticism, size and speed — so much so that the Red Sox felt Ball he was the best player available while selecting their highest draft pick in 20 years.
Watch the video above to hear what Cherington’s plans are for Ball in the Red Sox organization.

The man known as the “Greek God of Walks”, Kevin Youkilis was stable force in the Boston Red Sox lineup from 2006-2011. Many Red Sox were aggravated and questioned the team’s decision to trade the former three time All-Star last June 24 to the Chicago White Sox for a bag of balls in pitcher Zach Stewart and utility infielder Brent Lillibridge. Both never panned out for Boston...
Will Middlebrooks, Boston Red Sox third baseman, has sat on the bench in three of the last four games, as Jose Iglesias has manned the hot corner in his place.Due to such, the Providence Journal has suggested that Middlebrooks could be optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket as means to get the young slugger back on track. However, according to Red Sox manager John Farrell, Boston has no imminent...
Boston Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli is not the first MLB player to leave the top buttons on his jersey undone. Plenty of guys do it on warm days without caring if they look like slobs, but there is usually an undershirt involved. On Sunday, Napoli took that entirely out of the equation. As [...]
Boston Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz is not expected to start Tuesday, and there's no timetable for when the unbeaten right-hander might be ready to return from a strained neck.
Buchholz (9-0) did not throw a bullpen session Saturday, although he did do some flat-ground work. He's been on the disabled list since June 9.
"It's likely that at some point we're...
Before Alex Wilson got the call up to the Red Sox, he spent two successful seasons in Double-A Portland. Wilson was a starter for the Sea Dogs from 2010 to 2011 and was named to the Eastern League All-Star team. He was also named the Red Sox minor league pitcher of the year in 2011.
So Wilson, who now works out of the bullpen for the Sox, was the perfect pick to field questions from...
How hard is it to catch a routine fly ball at the Major League level? The first thing you need to do a track the ball and get underneath it. Wait until the ball comes down and catch it, preferably with two hands and squeeze the glove. Seems easy enough, and if you are at the big league level it should be routine.
Well, not in the case of Boston Red Sox right...
Prior to Tuesday’s start, Felix Doubront had never pitched into the eighth inning. He made it all the way through the eighth against the Rays in his latest start, yet didn’t earn the win for his efforts.
Doubront struck out six in his best start of the year, allowing three hits and zero walks in eight shutout innings. He lowered his ERA from 4.91 to 4.38 in the impressive outing...
(Leon Halip/Getty Images)The Carmine Hose got to 10-game-winner Max Scherzer early—scoring two runs in the first. Unfortunately, Red Sox pitching gave back 10 and, viola', Scherzer was 11-0 and Boston was a 10-3 loser. Rookie Allen Webster gave up 5 runs on his own in just 4 1/3 innings—the second straight bad outing for one of the centerpieces of The Great Punto Deal. The...
Clay Buchholz will not be coming off the disabled list Tuesday as the Red Sox had hoped. Buchholz was scheduled to throw in the bullpen Saturday, but he was still dealing with neck pain and only threw in the outfield.
Buchholz has been on the DL since June 9 with a sore right trapezius muscle.
With Buchholz unable to go, he will need at least a one...
(AP Photo/Duane Burleson)If Bud Selig needs any more evidence of the need for expanded instant replay, today's game is Exhibit A. Daniel Nava clearly made a legal catch (losing the ball on the transfer) that was ruled a drop by the entire inept umpiring crew. John Farrell legitimately argued the call and got his first ejection as Red Sox manager. The blown call led to a series...
The Tigers came from behind to beat the Red Sox 7-5 on Sunday afternoon at Comerica Park, but the score doesn't even begin to tell the story of what took place.
The Red Sox got to Detroit starter Justin Verlander for four runs on seven hits over five innings; they made him work, too, with 112 pitches.
With the Tigers leading 2-0 in the top...
After splitting the first two games, the Boston Red Sox (45-31) and Detroit Tigers (40-32) tangle in tonight’s Game 3 from Comerica Park. The Sox offense exploded for 10 runs, led by right fielder Shane Victorino, who went 4-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs. Boston’s batters must have thought the same as Red Sox Nation: No lead is safe.
A night after scoring 10 runs, the Boston Red Sox (45-32) and their bats went cold and the Detroit Tigers (41-32) trounced the Sox, 10-3, to take a 2-1 series lead. The Red Sox go for the split today, with Felix Doubront drawing Justin Verlander in the pitching matchup. Doubront is 4-3 with a 4.38 ERA, but is looking to duplicate his last start...

David Ortiz #34 of the Boston Red Sox picks up a camera during the eighth inning of the game against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park on June 22, 2013 in Detroit, Michigan. The Tigers defeated the Red Sox 10-3. We know how boring baseball games can be, you gotta stay busy somehow.-TO

As of late its been the Red Sox bullpen that has been the weakest link and most inconsistent part of the team. Since April 20th, the MOST consistent thing coming from the Red Sox was their designated hitter, David Ortiz. Making another run as an All-Star starter, Big Papi has been lighting it up all over the diamond. The 37 year old slugger has five...
