Fielder looks like a super addition to theTigers, but will he be the right fit? (Photo: AP)Some news, notes, and thoughts from my Indians notebook…Prince of TidesIt has been an offseason of shocking signings. First the Miami Marlins went crazy in early December spending a lot of money on three players, and then the Los Angeles Angels came out of nowhere to land the top free agent prize first baseman Albert Pujols. On Tuesday things got even crazier as it was announced that the Detroit Tigers signed free agent slugging first baseman Prince Fielder. The news came out of nowhere as up to the signing the Tigers were never really linked to him as a serious suitor, but after the announcement it sent an enormous shockwave throughout the Indians offices and to fans across the country. There is no doubt when a team can add one of the premier power hitters in the game that it is going to be a significant addition. With Fielder and his power bat in tow it makes for a very formidable one-two punc...

Rangers GM: Couldn't match Detroit for Fielder

If Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez never injured his left knee last week who knows what would've happened with the Prince Fielder sweepstakes. And there's a decent chance that the slugging first baseman could've landed with the Rangers. But after the Tigers showed they were committed to paying over 200 million to replace Martinez and lock up one of the...

Brewers' formula may change without Fielder

Prince Fielder is gone for good. Ryan Braun wasn't there, either. The two names most frequently mentioned during the Milwaukee Brewers' offseason weren't a part of the team's fan festival on Sunday. And if that's the way things still look at the beginning of the season, the Brewers insist they'll be just fine. The Brewers still plan on contending this season...

The Point is to Win

Not to make money. The fallout from the Prince Fielder bomb has been full of back row Joes claiming that this was a terrible signing by the Tigers and forecasting that the Tigers will rue the day they set up Prince Fielder’s off-springs’ off-springs for life.  The fatal flaw that I find with these numbers-based analysts is the assumption that the Tigers are concerned...

The Prince And The Paupers

With the signing of Prince Fielder on Tuesday afternoon, the Detroit Tigers have quickly become once again the favorites in the American League Central.  After losing top of the line player Victor Martinez  to injury, the Tigers solidified their lineup by bringing in their new masher. This sets up a problem for both Kansas City Royals of present and of future. The Royals will...

Curtis Granderson Notes the Growing Parity in the American League

Drew Sharp: Lowly Pistons can't copycat Tigers' move

The Pistons aren't getting their Prince Fielder. They signed a Prince to a free-agent contract recently, but bringing back Tayshaun didn't exactly inspire celebratory news conferences.

Nolan Ryan: With Prince Fielder, Tigers a 'force to be dealt with'

We expect power hitters to be big men. According to Baseball-Reference.com, of the 25 players who have hit at least 500 home runs, only four stood less than 6 feet in height: Willie Mays (5-feet-10), Mickey Mantle (5-11), Mel Ott (5-9) and former Tiger Gary Sheffield (5-11). Prince Fielder, who already has 230 homers, is 5-11.
