Carlos Pena is no longer the Tampa Bay Rays' everyday first baseman.

Manager Joe Maddon said Pena -- the team's top-paid position player at $7.25 million -- will still play, but not as often. Luke Scott and Jeff Keppinger will both be used at first base, too.

Pena is hitless in his past 17 at-bats with 10 strikeouts, and his .188 average is lowest of all major-leaguers who qualify for the batting title.

"Just trying to get the best matchups working," Maddon said. "I'm not saying Carlos is not going to play. That's not what I'm saying. It's just moving forward, some guys have been swinging the bats well."

Maddon will make his decision based on several factors: who is starting against the Rays (a right- or left-hander, and how he throws), the starter for the Rays (because he'd rather use Scott with flyball pitchers Matt Moore and Jeremy Hellickson), and where Evan Longoria is playing, at third base or designated hitter.

Scott played first base Thursday, and he went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in the Rays' 2-0 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. It was just Scott's second start in the field this year.
