It was definitely a Happy Mother’s Day at our house. Hope it was at yours as well. This week, we’re looking back at the gems the Cardinals’ pitched against the Rockies this weekend, a marquee outfielder who can’t get going, and more. Here we go:
Shelby Miller, St. Louis Cardinals
How do you pick which start was more impressive? I finally had to choose Miller’s since I’ve seen Adam Wainwright’s greatness before. I don’t think it’s a stretch at all to say that the 22-year-old pitched the single best game by a rookie starter since Kerry Wood’s 20-strikeout masterpiece against the Astros in 1998. Miller struck out 13, walked NONE and allowed only a broken-bat base hit against the Rockies. Some of the strikeouts were absolutely jaw-dropping. Perfectly placed fastballs. Breaking balls that dropped right over the plate. You name it. Miller had it all working for him. He said after the game on MLB Network that it was the best game he had ever pitched. Among the many stats and ch...
BEST OF MAXIM
AROUND THE WEB
As pretty much the entire baseball world knows by now, on Friday night, St. Louis Cardinals rookie right-hander Shelby Miller allowed a leadoff broken bat single before retiring the next 27 Colorado Rockies in order.
I asked researcher Tom Orf to help put this almost-perfect game into perspective.
St. Louis Cardinals, 0 walks, 13+ strikeouts
Although I live in the Chicago area and rarely get to see the Cardinals play live, you do not have to watch a game to know when a pitcher utterly dominates a team, which is just what Shelby Miller did on Friday night.
Against a pretty good hitting Rockies team (2nd in the NL in runs scored), Miller gave up a leadoff hit in the first, then proceeded to retire the next 27 batters...
GETS HIS GROOVE ON
Your browser does not support iframes.St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright has a lot to be happy about. His team is in first place and he is pitching exceptionally well. He is 5-2 with a sparkling 2.30 ERA this season for the Redbirds, by the way.So, the 31-year-old decided to come up with a signature dance with catcher Yadier Molina to celebrate this recent string of success....
Shelby Miller continues to dominate, 7 starts into 2013
Friday, May 10th, 2013, that will be a date that some 37,800 St. Louis Cardinals fans at Busch Stadium will remember for quite a while because young, talented Shelby Miller flat out dominated the Colorado Rockies last night. A leadoff single in the top of the first inning to Eric Young Jr. would be the only base runner...
Who knew that St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright had such smooth moves?
Watch as Adam and teammate Yadier Molina break it down in the Cardinals dugout during their victory over the New York Mets back on Monday:

(AP) -- St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright was off his game the last time out.
The right-hander might not need his best stuff given how the Colorado Rockies are struggling at the plate.
Wainwright and the Cardinals go for their ninth win in 10 games Saturday when this series continues at Busch Stadium.
Looking to rebound from his first defeat of the season, a 2-1 loss to...
A few weeks ago in one of my FanGraphs chats, I was asked who had a better chance of rediscovering his old self, between Scott Kazmir and Ubaldo Jimenez. I made the same sort of crack any one of us would’ve made at the time, like how you’d respond to the idea of Rich Harden or Nick Johnson staying healthy. Kazmir or Jimenez getting on track was practically unthinkable, or so...
ST. LOUIS (AP) Adam Wainwright carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning and was one out from the St. Louis Cardinals' second straight one-hitter over the suddenly punchless Colorado Rockies in a 3-0 victory Saturday.
The Rockies had been hitless in 49 consecutive at-bats before Nolan Arenado lined a clean hit to center field with one out in the eighth. Eric Young led off Friday...
The last thing that you’d think would rule a weekend between the St. Louis Cardinals and Colorado Rockies would be pitching. But not only was that the case, it was a historical level of pitching effectiveness. Between Shelby Miller, Adam Wainwright and Jorge De La Rosa, 21 complete hitless innings were tossed, and in the two of the starts, no-hitters were far from speculative;...
Two clear front-runners for the National League Rookie of the Year award have emerged through the first quarter of the season, St. Louis’s Shelby Miller and the Dodgers’ Hyun-Jin Ryu. Both started the season well. Ryu has had a couple rough outings and bounced back from them, and Miller has been dominant in every start except two where he failed to get out of the sixth inning...
What do Ryan Braun and Buster Posey have in common? Among other things, they both won Rookie of the Year awards after spending a good chunk of the season in the minors. Braun was called up on May 25, 2007 and hit .324 with 34 homers and 97 RBI. Posey arrived on May 29, 2010 and hit .305 with 18 homers and 67 RBI. The point is this: there's still time for big-time prospects like...
Player of the Game: Ubaldo Jimenez (6 Inn, 3 H, 1 ER 1 BB / 8 SO)
It was a nail biter in the heart of Motown Saturday night, as the Tribe snuck by their Central Division rival Detroit Tigers, 7-6. What looked to be an easy win against ace Justin Verlander with Cleveland up 6-1 in the seventh inning, ultimately fell apart late by the Indians bullpen.
Relievers Nick Hagadone...
Player of the Game
With his third straight solid start, Ubaldo Jimenez gets the award for tonight. Even when he did not hit his spots, his fastball had so much movement that it fooled the hitters anyway. Six strong innings is all the offense needed to effectively win the game. It could not have come at a better time as the Indians inch closer to the top spot in the A.L. Central...
1. Rangers 24-14 --
The Rangers havent had the toughest schedule so far as they climb to the top, but Texas will have a test this week as it heads to Oakland and then comes home for four games against Detroit.
2. Cardinals 24-13 1
Shelby Miller is anchoring an excellent rotation for the Cardinals. The rookie could be on his way to a NL Rookie of the Year award, or even a Cy...
Seven games. Six wins. I don't know about you, but I’ll take that kind of week any day.
With another outstanding week, the Cleveland Indians are now currently tied atop the standings of the American League Central with a 20-15 record. The Tribe has now won 15 of their past 20 games, and the wins have come in a variety of ways.
Pitching duels? Check. Offensive outbursts? Check...
