Justin Morneau hit the go-ahead single in the eighth inning to cap a three-hit night and carry the Minnesota Twins to a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday.
Jamey Carroll - who had two hits and snapped a 0-for-24 slump - drew a walk to start the eighth off reliever Mike Adams (1-4) and ended up on third after a Joe Mauer single and a fielder's choice.
Josh Willingham fouled out before Morneau lined a single up the middle off Antonio Bastardo to give Minnesota the lead.
Philadelphia tied it at 2 in the eighth when Ryan Howard's single off reliever Brian Duensing (1-1) scored Kevin Frandsen.
Glen Perkins pitched a perfect ninth, striking out Freddy Galvis to end the game and secure his 14th save.
The Phillies have lost four straight after winning five in a row to climb one game over .500.
Twins starter P.J. Walters allowed two runs in 7 1-3 innings and was removed with runners on first and second.
Right-hander Casey Fien originally trotted to the mound to relieve Walters, but was sent back soon after he arrived in favor of Duensing.
Apparently, the Twins' bullpen was confused whether manager Ron Gardenhire signaled for a righty or lefty while walking out to remove Walters.
Duensing struck out Jimmy Rollins, but Howard's grounder rolled through the right side of the infield to tie the game.
Cole Hamels had a 1-0 lead in the fourth before Willingham, Morneau and Oswaldo Arcia doubled to give Minnesota the lead.
Hamels allowed two runs and struck out five over six innings.
Arcia's double short-hopped the wall and landed just out of the reach of Ben Revere, who had his back to the infield and leaped toward the ball at the last second.
Revere was traded to Philadelphia from Minnesota in the offseason. The speedy center fielder made spectacular catches at Target Field to take away similar hits last season.
Michael Young had Philadelphia's other RBI in the third.
NOTES: An MRI on Monday revealed a medical meniscus tear in Erik Kratz's left knee, an injury that requires surgery and could knock out the Phillies' catcher for the rest of the season. Kratz was second on the team with eight home runs and hurt the knee running to first base in Saturday's loss to Milwaukee. ... Relievers Jared Burton (groin) and Ryan Pressly (shoulder) were unavailable for the Twins. Both are day to day. ... Revere on the Twins trading him: ''They gave me a chance to be a major league player, and I just thank them every day for that.'' ... Willingham played in his 1,000th game, becoming the 93rd active player to do so. ... Mike Pelfrey (3-6, 6.40 ERA) starts for the Twins on Tuesday. Coming off Tommy John surgery, the right-hander has only managed to complete six innings or more in three of his 12 starts this season. ... Coming off a start where he shut out the Brewers over 6 2-3 innings, Tyler Cloyd (2-2, 3.68) takes the mound for Philadelphia on Tuesday.

When the Minnesota Twins made Byron Buxton the No. 2 pick in the 2012 MLB Draft, they knew they were getting a supremely athletic, toolsy high school outfielder who could play some incredible defense. Buxton also had the added value of being a guy who will likely stick in center field. So far, the kid has lived up to the hype. On Monday night, Buxton made one of the better catches...
MINNEAPOLIS Even though Justin Morneau hasn't homered in over 160 at-bats, the Twins first baseman has still been a big part of Minnesota's offense.
Such was the case Tuesday, when Morneau went 3-for-4 with a double and drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning to help Minnesota top Philadelphia by a 3-2 final at Target Field. Morneau's single with...

Pitching, pitching and more...catchers...?
The 2013 draft saw the Minnesota Twins doing some of the predictable by picking up a bunch of pitching prospects. It also saw some of the unpredictable with them going with some catching prospects as well.
It's obvious that the Twins need pitching as game in and game out, it seems to be their achilles...
Minnesota Twins minor leaguer Byron Buxton made one of the sickest catches you will see this season. Buxton, the center fielder for the low Single-A Cedar Rapids Kernels, made a diving catch on the warning track to rob Kane County’s David Boke of an extra-base hit during the top of the second inning of his [...]
Cedar Rapids Kernels center fielder Byron Buxton, second overall selection by the Minnesota Twins in the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft, showed why with this full extension, dirt pushing...

Your browser does not support iframes.A pitching change didn't go so smoothly for Ron Gardenhire and the Twins Tuesday.Gardenhire walked out to the mound and called for southpaw Brian Duensing to enter the game. However, nobody in the Twins bullpen could quite see what Gardenhire motioned for, so they sent in right-hander Casey Fien, instead. Whoops!Fien gets all the way to the...
The Phillies took a 3-2 lead into the eighth inning Wednesday, but were unable to hold on as Minnesota surged back to win the ballgame 4-3.
The Phillies have now lost a season-high five straight games as they fall to 31-35 on the season.
Wednesday’s game was the same type of nightmare they experienced the day before. Their starting pitching was okay, but labored and could not go...
Philadelphia Phillies catcher Erik Kratz suffered a knee injury over the weekend that landed him on the 15-day disabled list. It turns out he'll be sidelined much longer than the 15 days, as he recently underwent knee surgery that will require him to be on the shelf for six to eight weeks, according to Matt Gelb of The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Phillies are saying 6-8 weeks...
Chase Utley has been on the disabled list since May 21st, but he is closing in on a return date. The Philadelphia Phillies have yet to schedule or send Utley on a rehab assignment, but his progress is good so far, and it's not beyond the realm of possibility that he returns next week.
Todd Zolecki of MLB.com says Utley feels good about where he is and despite the lack of...

P.J. Walters vs. Cole Hamels

-Delmon Young is 0-for-8 against Walters in his career.
-Jimmy Rollins 1-for-1.

MINNEAPOLIS The list of highlight reel catches that Ben Revere made in 133 games at Target Field is a long one. For most fans, it might be tough to pick a favorite.
The former Twin has one in mind, though. He refers to it only as "the one I made in 2011." He made several plays that year, but the one that Revere recalls fondest came back on Aug. 22, 2011 when he robbed...
Going to be flipping between the Twins and the NBA Finals tonight, so might as well write some random stuff while doing those things.
- First off, I know we are all very excited about our little Byron Buxton and the just promoted to double-A Miguel Sano and with good reason. Buxton is hitting .350/.444/.578 with 8 triples, 7 homers, and 26 steals while playing amazing defense...
Following the weekend series in Milwaukee, the Phillies continue their road trip with visits to Minneapolis and Colorado. The Phillies will then return home for a week-long homestand against the Nats and Mets. The Nationals have struggled enormously lately while injuries have continued to pile up as star ace Stephen Strasburg was sent to the DL with a strained muscle in his back...
