Twins 6, Tigers 4. Updates. With AP Photos. By LARRY LAGE AP Sports Writer Trevor Plouffe hit a two-run single during Minnesota's four-run fourth inning, helping the Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 6-4 Monday night.
Minnesota had six singles in all during its big rally as it earned its fourth consecutive win to lift Ron Gardenhire to 900 career victories.
Anthony Swarzak (2-4) picked up the win, allowing a hit and one walk in 2 2-3 innings of relief. Alex Burnett allowed only one walk in 1 1-3 innings and Glen Perkins pitched the ninth for his third save in five chances in place of injured closer Matt Capps.
Detroit was trying to get back to .500 for the first time since May 15.
Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder hit one-out singles in the ninth, but their teammates couldn't bring them home. Delmon Young hit a long fly for the second out and Brennan Boesch struck out to end the game.
Doug Fister (1-6) gave up six runs and eight hits in four-plus innings, leaving the Tigers...

Minnesota Twins pitcher Francisco Liriano is a hot name on the trade rumor mill. A quick look at his 2012 season bears a striking resemblance to his career stats. His start on July 1st against the Royals was a 4 walk, 4 run no decision. In his previous two starts he logged 13.1 innings, surrendered 2 runs and 4 walks, while striking out 11.
In 2006 and 2010, Liriano was dominating...
The reader may very well be totally and irretrievably drunk at the moment, but it’s not for that reason that he’s seeing Trevor Plouffe‘s name near the top of the preceding [leaderboard]. As of Tuesday night, at least, Plouffe had hit the most home runs (nine) among major leaguers in June.

It has been rumored that the Tigers may be inquiring into the asking price on Philadelphia Phillies ace Cole Hamels.
Hamels is currently 10-4 with a 3.08 ERA and 111 K’s in as many innings for the fightin’ Phils. He is a bona fide ace and would bring a dominant left-handed starter to the Tigers for the first time since, well, since when? Denny McLain? That may not be as far off...
If any player has been underrated for the Minnesota Twins this season, it very well may be reliever Alex Burnett.
The last time the right-handed Burnett gave up a run was May 23. He extended that scoreless streak to 16 total innings by tossing 1-13 shutout innings in the Twins' 6-4 win Monday in Detroit.
Burnett entered Monday's game with two outs in the seventh inning...
MINNEAPOLIS Joe Mauer is an All-Star once again.
The Twins catcher was named to the American League roster for the 2012 All-Star game. It will be Mauer's fifth All-Star appearance in his nine-year career and his first since 2010.
Prior to Sunday's series finale against Kansas City, Mauer was batting .325 with a league-high on-base percentage of .416. He has driven in 36...
DETROIT Andy Dirks is just a bored baseball player right now.
The Tigers outfielder has been on the disabled list since May 31 because of the right Achilles tendinitis leaving him stuck using a walking boot.
"Its just one of those things that we just got to get that spot healed," Dirks said. "Timetable-wise, I have no idea. Its been a rough injury for me. Ive had...
Detroit Tigers, 38-40, 4 games behind Chicago.
Is it time to move Austin Jackson back in the lineup?
AJax continues to impress, still leading the Tigers in batting average (.326), on base percentage (.408) and OPS (.945), and only a few points behind Cabrera in slugging percentage (.537 to .541).
With runners in scoring position, the big bat in the Tiger lineup is not Miguel Cabrera...
It was a grisly incident, but Detroit Tigers left-hander Darin Downs doesn't mind retelling it. Reaching the major leagues three years after suffering a skull fracture when hit by a line drive "is kind of a feel-good story for me." The tale has not reached its completion yet, but Downs at least has a feeling of accomplishment after making his major league debut...
Josh Willingham and Trevor Plouffe hit homers in a five-run third and Ryan Doumit had a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the seventh inning, lifting the Minnesota Twins to an 8-6 win over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night.
Joe Mauer had three hits, including a solo homer to lead off the ninth that gave the Twins a two-run lead and helped earn a season-high, five-game winning streak....
The Detroit Tigers will have three members of their 2012 roster participating in this year’s All-Star game, led by Prince Fielder who won the fan vote at first base. Joining Fielder in Kansas City will be Justin Verlander and Miguel … Continue reading →
Justin Verlander, Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder will represent the Detroit Tigers in Kansas City on July 10.
Austin Jackson and Joaqun Benoit did not make the American League roster, and neither is part of the Final Vote.

Francisco Liriano is back?
That’s what people keep saying. All these different fantasy baseball “guru’s” have been pumping Liriano to the point that he’s the most added starting pitcher in ESPN leagues. He had three quality starts in a row, and since returning to the starting rotation has clearly been better than he was earlier in the season, but back? I don’t think so...
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Prince Fielder and Austin Jackson drove in runs to help the Detroit Tigers pull away from a sixth-inning tie to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-3 on Sunday.
Left-hander Drew Smyly (3-3) pitched five solid innings, allowing three runs and three hits to get his first win since May 25. The rookie walked one and struck out four.
Five different players drove in...

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. Quintin Berry said Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn became so much more than his coach at San Diego State.
Tony was my mentor and a father figure for me, said Berry, the rookie left fielder who has emerged to spark the Detroit Tigers. He taught me everything how to hold myself as a professional and as a man.
