Josmil Pinto hit an RBI single in the 11th inning and the Minnesota Twins overcame 12 strikeouts by Justin Verlander to beat the Detroit Tigers 4-3 on Monday night. The Tigers led 3-0 in the eighth, but Jose Veras gave up RBI doubles to Eduardo Escobar and pinch-hitter Ryan Doumit. Brian Dozier led off the ninth with a tying homer against previously perfect closer Joaquin Benoit. Dozier opened the 11th with a single off Luke Putkonen (1-2) and advanced on a wild pitch. Pinto punched a single to right field to give manager Ron Gardenhire his 998th career victory. Verlander gave up six hits and walked three in six shutout innings for the Tigers, whose magic number remained two for clinching the AL Central. Anthony Swarzak (3-2) pitched the 11th for the win. Torii Hunter had two doubles and an RBI for Detroit, and Miguel Cabrera had two hits and an RBI while moving gingerly on a sore groin that kept him out of Sunday's loss to the White Sox. It was a rare stumble for Benoit, ...

Twins pitcher Mike Pelfrey ends season on high note

MINNEAPOLIS -- Adversity has been something Twins pitcher Mike Pelfrey has become accustomed to over the last few years. So a flu bug was nothing more than a mere annoyance Monday against Detroit as the right-hander made what turned out to be his final start of the season. Admittedly not feeling well as he dealt with the flu, Pelfrey took the mound against the Tigers in the Twins...

Twins' Joe Mauer getting better, had another good day of workouts

While the Minnesota Twins will not see Joe Mauer back on the field this season, his symptoms are fading and he is getting better.  It took a while for him to start making some progress, but Mauer has now been symptom-free for a few days.  His concussion has kept him out for over a month now. Joe Mauer had another good day of workouts at Target Field. Has been symptom-free...

Tigers fall in extras, but approach strikeout record

The magic number remains two for the Detroit Tigers to clinch the Central Division. The bullpen let a 3-0 lead and a victory for Justin Verlander get away on Monday night in a 4-3 loss to the Minnesota Twins. Josmil Pinto singled in the winning run off Luke Putkonen in the 11th inning, and Joaquin Benoit blew his first save opportunity in 23 attempts by serving up a ninth-inning...

Tigers' Miguel Cabrera held out of lineup with sore groin

The Detroit Tigers aren't taking any chances.  With Miguel Cabrera being pulled out of Saturday's game with a minor injury, the team decided to hold him out of Sunday's game altogether.  He is still nursing a sore groin. According to Jason Beck of MLB.com, Cabrera said he felt better prior to Sunday's game, but it seemed like he knew he wasn't playing.  Cabrera...

Rondon could play major role for Tigers in postseason

Bruce Rondon started the season in the minor leagues but it appears he could play a major role for the Tigers in the postseason. With their 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins Tuesday night, the Tigers clinched a playoff berth but the division-clinching celebration will have to wait. Everyone knows the bullpen givens in closer Joaquin Benoit, set-up man Jose Veras, left-hander...

Ron Gardenhire has jokes about the A’s potentially clinching the division

With a win over the Twins or a Rangers loss, the A’s could be clinching their 16th division title on Sunday. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was asked about that possibility and his answer was the greatest: “I don’t want them to swim in our pool, which is usually our dugout here.” Funny and doubly topical. Nicely done, sir. Nicely done. Unless you are John McCain. [SF Gate]

Game 2013.157: Tigers at Twins

91 – 65, 2. I liked it better when you got all of your baseballs stats from one place: the sports page. Or really, one to two pages of the sports section. Everything was laid out right in front of you, so you could jump from team to team, or stat to stat, without clicking anywhere or waiting for a page to load. Growing up, I regularly read the Fort Worth Star Telegram and then...

Tigers clinch American League playoff berth

MINNEAPOLIS -- Torii Hunter couldn't help but peek at the out-of-town scoreboard at Target Field, glancing toward the LED board in right-center field. When Cleveland trailed Chicago by a run in the bottom of the ninth, the Tigers outfielder felt his team had a chance to clinch the American League Central on Tuesday night with a win over Minnesota. Not long after, the score in...

Miguel Cabrera returns to Tigers' lineup

Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera returned to the lineup yesterday after missing Sunday's game due to his lingering groin injury. Tigers manager Jim Leyland told reporters -- including Jason Beck of MLB.com -- that he won't hesitate to rest Cabrera if he feels it's necessary, but he also said that he will play the All-Star if he's healthy. "If...

PHOTO: Tigers rookies become Disney princesses

Aside from the Tiger rookie pitchers towing the Hello Kitty backpack to the bullpen prior to every game it’s become an annual tradition for all the rookies to get in on the humiliation but in the nature of good fun. This year the Bruce Rondon, Bryan Holaday, Hernan Perez, Nick Castellanos, Jose Alvarez, Jose Iglesias and Evan Reed dressed as some of the most disturbing (and funny...

Twins look to spoil Detroit's party once again

The Detroit Tigers' attempt to move a step closer to an AL Central title was undone in their series opener with the Minnesota Twins. Doug Fister will try to help the Tigers wrap up that third straight division crown by delivering another solid outing against the Twins on Tuesday night. Detroit (91-66) had a 3-2 lead heading into the ninth inning Monday at Target Field, but Brian...

Tigers' celebration still on hold

Outside the Detroit clubhouse, inside a yellow van parked in a loading area, a few boxes labeled ''Dom Perignon'' provided a reminder of an opportunity missed - but not lost. The Tigers fell short in their effort to clinch the AL Central title during the final homestand of the season, losing 6-3 to the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. There would be no champagne-soaked...

No clincher for Detroit: White Sox beat Tigers 6-3

Erik Johnson pitched into the seventh inning in his fourth career start, and the Chicago White Sox beat Detroit 6-3 to end any chance of the Tigers clinching the AL Central title in their home finale Sunday. Detroit needed a win and a Cleveland loss to wrap up the division in the Tigers' final scheduled home game. Johnson (2-2) allowed two runs and nine hits in 6 2-3 innings...

Who will make the mistake to overpay for Balfour and/ or Benoit? (in years, not dollars)

Coming into this season, both Oakland Athletics RHP Grant Balfour and Detroit Tigers RHP Joaquin Benoit were considered important pieces to their teams respective bullpens. While the Tigers seemed indecisive in regards to who their closer was going to be, Benoit was not considered to be the favorite to pitch in the 9th inning to finish games. His best success had come as a set up...
