Fox Sports North:
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Twins knew they were going to have to make a roster move in order to make room for Mike Pelfrey on the 25-man roster. Ultimately, P.J. Walters was the odd man out.
Minnesota designated Walters for release or assignment after Thursday's game and will activate Pelfrey from the disabled list before his start on Saturday in Toronto. In eight starts this year for the Twins, Walters was 2-5 with a 5.95 ERA. He also appeared in 12 games last year and was also 2-5 with a 5.69 ERA in 2012.
Because Walters is out of minor league options, Minnesota had to designate him rather than send him to Triple-A Rochester.
"No matter which way we went, it was going to suck," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said about the roster move. "Somebody was going to have to go. We like these guys out there. P.J.'s thrown some pretty good ballgames for us and pitched pretty well."
Walters recently had back-to-back outings in which he was hit around early and often. On June 22 against Cleveland, he allowed six runs on one hit and five walks in just two thirds of an inning before he was pulled. His next time out he surrendered six runs in three innings against Kansas City.
Walters bounced back to go five innings Wednesday against the Yankees and allowed three runs in a 3-2 loss. Still, it wasn't enough to save his job.
"He's done a decent job for us, stepped in and really helped us out when we were really scuffling along," Gardenhire said. "It's not easy. We'll see where this takes him and see how this all turns out."
Pelfrey went on the 15-day disabled list on June 23 with a back strain and made a rehab start with Low-A Cedar Rapids on Monday. He pitched six innings in that game and allowed two runs on two hits. Pelfrey, 29, is 3-6 with a 6.11 ERA in 14 starts this season, his first with the Twins.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Twins outfielder Josh Willingham will be sidelined at least a month after having arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Wednesday. The procedure was done to repair a torn meniscus in his knee; he's also letting a bone bruise heal in the meantime.
With Willingham out, the door is now open for a few players to see more playing time in his absence. Oswaldo Arcia got...
If you have that coveted front row seat even if it’s for a 4th place vs a 3rd place team hey its FRONT ROW!! I know the Yankee name always draws a crowd but who on the Yankees is exciting right now? NOBODY!
The Twins are only in 4th because the White Sox are horrendous and on the verge of blowing up the team like all my jerk neighbors with their fireworks.
Chris Parmelee has...
MINNEAPOLIS -- Kyle Gibson's much-anticipated major league debut lived up to the hype as the former first-round pick earned a win against Kansas City. His second start was a different story.
On Thursday, Gibson had a rude awakening against the New York Yankees. In just his second career big league start, the rookie right-hander had perhaps the worst outing of his professional...
Minnesota Twins first baseman Chris Parmelee went above and beyond yesterday, down 9-1 to the Yankees, slamming into the wall and then joining fans along right field. Your browser does not support... Full story at Bob's Blitz ~ http://www.bobsblitz.com
Chris Parmelee's diving catch over the right side wall Thursday might have been one of the few highlights for the Minnesota Twins over the Fourth of July holiday series against the New York Yankees this week — but it was a good one.
After a few precarious moments, the first baseman shook off the crash landing into the first row and returned to the game with the ball firmly...
New team, same results for Mark Buehrle against the Minnesota Twins.
The longtime White Sox pitcher faced a familiar Twins team Friday, although he was wearing a Toronto Blue Jays uniform. No matter who Buehrle is pitching for, he has Minnesota's number. That was the case again Friday as he pitched seven scoreless innings to help the Blue Jays blank the Twins in a 4-0 win in...
As a follow-up to my preview where I said the Twins would land Kohl Stewart at #4 (nailed it), here's a look at the rest of the players the Twins selected. Looking at the early rounds, the Twins continued to pursue pitching and nabbed a bunch of catchers, which is definitely a weak spot in the system. After that they went all over the board grabbing some outfielders and even...
Mark Buerhle made his 50th start against the Minnesota Twins one to remember.
Jose Bautista hit his 20th home run, Buehrle pitched seven shutout innings to win for the first time in three starts and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the slumping Twins 4-0 Friday.
Buehrle (5-5) allowed six hits, walked none and struck out five. The left-hander is 3-0 with a 1.69 ERA in his past five home...
CC Sabathia won his 200th career game to stretch his winning streak over Minnesota to nearly six years, and Robinson Cano hit a tying two-run double to spark the New York Yankees in a 3-2 victory over the Twins on Wednesday night.
Cano fueled the three-run sixth against Twins starter PJ Walters (2-5), who was pitching for his job. Trevor Plouffe homered against Sabathia (9-6), but...
I’ve been seeing more and more of this:
Mauer with a sac-fly RBI to bring in Florimon.
— Minnesota Twins (@Twins) July 4, 2013
So then I asked myself…why is it no longer just a regular “sacrifice fly”? Why does it have to be qualified as a “sac-fly RBI” or the like? I decided to just look up “sacrifice fly” in the baseball glossary just to be sure I didn’t...
The Yankees beat the Twins again last night, continuing their dominance over Minnesota which began after Ron Gardenhire was named manager. Unlike the previous game, there were no records set last night. They got a lead, the bullpen made it close and Mariano Rivera came in to close it out. Yankees win, theeeeeee Yankees win.Speaking of Ron Gardenhire, it was he who came up with the...
The whole stupid process of opposing teams giving retiring Mariano Rivera gifts continues. Last night it was the Minnesota Twins. And while the item is cool - a rocker made of broken bats - the...

CC Sabathia (8-6, 4.15 ERA) squares off against P.J. Walters (2-4, 6.03 ERA) and will try to win the series against Minnesota. Sabathia had a no hitter going into the sixth inning on June 28 against Baltimore but blew a three run lead, losing a 4-3 decision. His fastball, slider and changeup all looked sharp, and Sabathia said he doesn’t feel far off from dominance. He struggled...
Brian Dozier hit a three-run home run, Mike Pelfrey and three relievers combined for a four-hitter and the Minnesota Twins beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-0 on Saturday.
Dozier had two hits and four RBIs, connecting off knuckleballer R.A. Dickey for his eighth homer as the Twins snapped a six-game skid and won for just the fourth time in 14 games.
Minnesota came in having lost 17...
