July 23, 2010 - Baltimore, Maryland, United States of America - 23 July 2010: Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Jesse Crain.
So, the Minnesota Twins lost again last night to the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3. Jesse Crain was the latest pitcher to falter after a good start by Carl Pavano; Crain earned the loss last night, and he deserved it. Crain has been lights out for the Twins bullpen the second half of this season, but gave up a three-run homer in the eighth inning last night. Ugh.

But at least it wasn’t a blowout like the previous game, which the Twins lost to the Blue Jays 13-2. At least the Twins showed a little life in the ninth inning last night, even if it was too little too late. Yikes.

Now, the Twins have always had a hard time with the Blue Jays. I don’t know why – the Blue Jays and the New York Yankees (yuck) just seem to have the Twins’ number. Just like the Twins always beat the Chicago White Sox.

But I’m more concerned about the Twins pitching than anything else. Our guys are just throwing crap out there – I think I might be able to get a hit off of them right now. Pavano didn’t get a win, but at least he had a reasonably good start. Better than his last start, when Pavano dropped a 5-0 lead.

But now Jesse Crain, who’s been terrific of late for the Twins bullpen, looked like a mess on the mound last night. I don’t worry when you put in someone like Alex Burnett or Glen Perkins and they don’t do a good job – I wouldn’t expect them to do well. But Jesse Crain is another story – he’s one of our go-to guys, and he’s got to do a better job than that.

I don’t know what’s going on with the Twins right now. Ron Gardenhire must be ready to scream. I know I feel like screaming. These games since the Twins clinched the AL Central – well, they haven’t exactly been confidence-inspiring. I just don’t want the Twins to fall apart in the ALDS like they did last year.

But I’m getting more and more concerned that they will.

A side note: with this loss, the Twins are almost certainly out of home field advantage contention for the ALCS. All the Tampa Bay Rays or New York Yankees (yuck) need to do is win one game, and the Twins will get shut out. On a positive note, there’s no way the Texas Rangers can catch the Twins, so the Twins will have home field advantage for the ALDS.

I guess we’ll have to be content with that.
