Here's a sentence you haven't heard lately: The Twins are on a roll. They swept the Oakland A's in a three-game series. And Francisco Liriano is coming off what, for him, was a brilliant performance. Liriano threw six shutout innings and struck out nine in the 4-0 Wednesday win that completed the sweep.Never mind that the A's are in a slump and have had the worst batting average in the majors. It's an encouraging sweep; it's something to build on.The Twins have to continue to get timely hits, something they did against the A's. The first two games in the sweep were come-from-behind wins. Those are the type games that lift the level of confidence throughout the roster. Then there's the pitching. The starting rotation has been a trouble spot for much of the season. That wasn't the case against the A's, and it hasn't been as much of an issue lately. The rotation has improved with the additions of minor league call-ups P.J. Walters, Scott Diamond and Cole De Vries.Meantime, Liriano's best outing of the season will keep him in the rotation after a clear-the-mind stretch in the bullpen. Liriano has the talent to be an ace, but his career has been pocked by injuries and inconsistencies. If he can build on what he did against the A's, the Twins can begin to count on him. And then they will have something to build on.
