The Minnesota Twins have traded right-handed pitcher Kevin Slowey to the Colorado Rockies for a player to be named later, the team announced Tuesday. Slowey, 27, spent his first five seasons in the majors with the Twins, breaking into the league in 2007. He began his career as a starter but was moved to the bullpen prior to the 2011 season. In five years with Minnesota, Slowey was 39-29 and posted a 4.66 ERA in 532 23 innings pitched. Slowey made it known that he wanted to be a starter and wasn't happy with the bullpen role. Due to injuries to several starters in 2011, Slowey eventually got his wish. He was thrust into the rotation late in the season but he struggled as a starter, going 0-8 with a 7.25 ERA in eight starts (44 23 innings). He also spent time on the disabled list this past season, missing extended time with an abdominal strain. He also missed 18 games in 2010 with a strained right biceps, and was sidelined for the second half of the 2009 season with a wrist injury that required surgery. The Twins selected Slowey out of Winthrop University in the second round of the 2005 draft. He made 2.7 million during the 2011 season. The Slowey deal marks the first trade of Terry Ryan's second go-round as general manager. He took over for Bill Smith in early November and has since made several free agent signings, including veteran infielder Jamey Carroll, backup catcher Ryan Doumit and reliever Matt Capps, who pitched for the Twins the last two seasons.
