One can only hope he was wearing a cup.
Wednesday night’s Angels-Ranger game turned out to be a snoozer, with Texas jumping out to a big early lead on Angels rookie Michael Roth and never looking back. But for home plate umpire John Hirshbeck, the game featured one of the worst instances in a long line of taking pitches and foul tips off his body.
With Angels reliever Nick Maronde pitching pitching to veteran catcher A.J. Pierzynski, Maronde threw an inside fastball far off the plate. Pierzynski actually started and checked his swing, somehow barely getting a piece of it, but that was enough of a redirection to elude the glove of catcher Chris Iannetta.
Since we now know there was no serious injury, we can laugh at Hirschbeck’s misfortune with the glee of Homer Simpson. So, enjoy a man getting hit by a baseball in the groin and immediately toppling over in the video below.

Mike Trout has only been in the majors for less than two full seasons, but he has already made more amazing catches than most players will make throughout their entire careers. On Tuesday night, he was at it again as he saved the game for the Los Angeles Angels in the 9th inning against the Texas Rangers. With the score tied 4-4 and a runner...
MLB News: The Los Angeles Angels have recalled right handed pitcher Barry Enright. To make room for him, the Angels also optioned David Carpenter to Triple-A Salt Lake. Look for Enright to fill in at long relief and as a mop up guy.
Fantasy Ramifications: The Angels Enright holds no fantasy baseball value.

Last night Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish continued his dominant season. Darvish pitched 6 Innings, giving up only 3 hits and no runs, while striking out 11 against the Angels, improving his record to 4-1. This GIF is awesome. It shows all five of Darvish’s pitches in one motion. You just have to see it for yourself.

GAME 20 - ANGELS AT MARINERS
SEATTLE -- Angels manager Mike Scioscia says he believes the first 20 games his team has played are the exception, not the rule. The track records of his players, he says, reflect different numbers than the ones they have put up so far this season.
But after Tuesday's 1-0 loss to the...
Home plate umpire John Hirschbeck was in the line of fire on Wednesday night, and his manly region got the worst end of a foul ball.
A.J. Pierzynski was up in the fourth inning of the Texas Rangers-LA Angels game and checked his swing on a pitch from Nick Maronde. He fouled the ball off, and it appeared to go into the dirt before jumping up and nailing Hirschbeck in the groin. The...
Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish has great control over five pitches, and this spectacular GIF proves it.
And Boom goes the dynamite…or the ball bag!
Umpire John Hirschbeck was the victim of a Nick Maronde fastball that went right off the glove of Chris Iannetta in the top of the 4th inning. Not sure if Hirschbeck was wearing a cup but if anyone has ever been hit in the cup with a baseball knows that it still rattles the cage.
The Angels ended up losing to the Texas Rangers 11-3...

GAME 21 - ANGELS AT MARINERS
SEATTLE -- It's difficult to determine which was a bigger
surprise Wednesday night. Was it a loss by the Seattle Mariners, only the
second in their past 16 games? Or was it Orlando Palmeiro, with six home runs
in 11-plus professional seasons, batting third for the Angels?
This season so far has been....some sort of ride. A rash of injuries has plagued the Angels, sending a good number of their starting regulars on the DL. A sudden outbreak of injuries opened up a sizeable number of spots for the kids on their way up from the minors to show off their goods out of the bullpen. Take, for instance, Angels 2012 9th round draft pick Michael Roth. This is...
Watch this gif, it is a blend of Yu Darvish throwing all five of his pitches. Watch each pitch do their thing, yet Darvish’s mechanics, motion, arm speed and action is the exact same for every pitch. That is the ultimate gift of a great pitcher, absolute perfect blend of deception and mechanical discipline.
I’m really glad I didn’t try to stay awake for last night’s game. Eleven innings? This girl doesn’t have it in her for any of that nonsense. Especially since it was a loss. Not quite as fun to wake up to that box score this morning.
You know what else wasn’t fun? Watching Jeff Baker limp off the field in the 1st inning after making a great sliding catch. He’s...
Nelson Cruz capped a nine-run fourth inning with a three-run
homer, Lance Berkman had four run batted ins and the Texas Rangers helped Yu
Darvish cruise to an 11-3 victory over the anaheim angels on
Wednesday night in the rubber game of the series., http://juicedsportsblog.com/sports-news/news/darvish-sharp-rangers-crush-angels
Maurer came into tonight’s game with a 7.45 ERA. Apparently, that was good enough because he was able to shutout the Angels through 6 1/3 innings. But, that had more to do with the Angels’ bats, than Maurer’s pitching (I refuse to give him any credit). The Angels just couldn’t find any momentum. It was just one of those games. No player reached third base...
Confession: I fell asleep in the 7th inning last night.
I tried valiantly to stay up and watch the game. But my MLB.tv buffers so much (thanks, cheap internet!) that I fell asleep between the parts of the game I actually got to see.
Needless to say, I was delighted to wake up this morning and check the box score (yeah, that’s the first thing I did). It sounds like I missed...
Umpire John Hirschbeck will never be the same after this (untrue). Check out how a fastball from Nick Maronde was just a bit inside and slipped past the catcher’s mitt and went directly where no man wants a fastball to end up. Hirschbeck and his extremely sturdy cup were fine.
