Well the inevitable occurred today when Freddy Garcia was re-assigned to minor league camp, making Livan Hernandez the fifth starter. What wasn't known, as I mentioned in an earlier post was whether Garcia would accept the assignment. Apparently the two sides had a gentleman's agreement in which Garcia wasn't going to be forced to the minors. With an ERA over 10 it's clear that Freddy needs more recover time and there's no sense getting beat-up playing for a smaller market team, when he can come back up mid-season to a competitive team where he has many friends on the roster. Now the Mets will have Tim Redding and Freddy Garcia working towards returning, that's a lot better depth then the days of Jose Lima and Brian Lawrence.....Mets assistant GM John Ricco just informed us that Freddy Garcia, who was fighting a losing battle with Livan Hernandez in the competition for the No. 5 starter role, has accepted an assignment to minor-league camp.
