INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- My message to the Texas Rangers when they lose Josh Hamilton will be the same as it was to the St. Louis Cardinals when they lost Albert Pujols.
Happy Independence Day.
Nothing against Hamilton and Pujols both are incredible talents. But just as the Cardinals were better off avoiding a mega-deal for Pujols, the Rangers will be better off avoiding one for Hamilton.
In fact, the Rangers have so many good, versatile players, they could be in an even stronger position than the Cardinals were when Pujols bolted for the Los Angeles Angels last December.
Really, the only question is how the Rangers want to go about this.
Their possibilities include:
--Trading shortstop Elvis Andrus, possibly for Arizona Diamondbacks right fielder Justin Upton, and turning over short to hotshot rookie Jurickson Profar.
--Playing Profar at second base, where he would form an electric double-play combination with Andrus, and moving Ian Kinsler to left field.
--Signing a top fr...

The Seattle Mariners are one of several teams, including the
Baltimore Orioles, Atlanta Braves, Pittsburgh Pirates and Milwaukee Brewers,
that could possibly target outfielder Josh Hamilton this offseason, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com.
The Mariners look like a possible new entry in the Josh Hamilton sweepstakes, people familiar with their thinking
IT'S BEEN REAL
The Rangers appear unwilling to offer Josh Hamilton more than a three-year deal, which likely means the team is willing to allow the slugger leave in free agency.
Ben and Sam discuss whether Josh Hamilton could end up signing a reasonable contract after all and talk about whether the Yankees can commit to and compete despite their goal to get under the luxury tax threshold by 2014.
It's a terrifying concept, but CBS' Jon Heyman says the Red Sox are considering making a run at Josh Hamilton. The fact that it is "unlikely" gives me a little relief.
Hamilton's situation is well documented so I won't exhaust it here. Suffice it to say, I think it would be a tremendous mistake to sign him. Want proof? Texas, where he has thrived despite...
Justin Upton was supposed to be Mike Trout.
Taken No. 1 overall in the 2005 amateur draft, Upton was promoted to the big leagues just over two years later by August 2007 at the age of 19, and the world was expected — to a degree rightfully so. While Upton was still a teenager upon arriving in The Show, he didn’t only have all the skills to be successful at that age, but he had...
We're still at the tire-kicking stage of the Josh Hamilton sweepstakes, still largely playing a guessing game. But in theory, some teams make more sense than others -- assuming, of course, that those teams are willing to gamble on a recovering addict who seems to deal with one physical issue after another.
Hardly anyone in the sport has any idea which team will sign Hamilton...
Bottom of the second inning, and as Upton walked toward the plate, he might have noticed that no one was referring to him as the future anymore… It wasn’t much of a crowd, and therefore it wasn’t much of a heckle, but what it lacked in long and loud, it made up for in short and sweet. This was the sound of a crowd protesting spoiled brats and mouthy prospects and unpaid dues...
Stop me if you’ve heard this before; the Diamondbacks are listening to offers for Justin Upton again. These aren’t even just courtesy phone calls to check in on his availability, or speculation from other teams about his availability – Kevin Towers flat out confirmed that he’s in trade negotiations with other teams about his star right fielder.
“I’m open-minded and...
Mark Elfenbein, from 105.3 FM in Dallas, joins Fox Sports Tonight to talk about the Cowboys and Josh Hamilton's free agency situation.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are once again attempting to trade
outfielder Justin Upton, and the chances of the talented slugger playing
elsewhere next season are “80-20,” according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
however, say the team is again engaged in active discussions about Upton, and
one estimates the chances of him playing elsewhere next...
One of the most intriguing things in sports is watching siblings play. It’s always great to see them play against each other (Eli vs. Peyton), but this offseason the Upton brothers actually have a chance of playing on the same team. Wouldn’t it be great to watch them together, side by side? I think their productivity could rise to a new horizon. B.J. and Justin both need a...

The Texas Rangers have three players who are finalists for Baseball Writers Association of America honors, including two of the five finalists for most valuable player.
Both outfielder Josh Hamilton and third baseman Adrian Beltre are finalists, along with Detroit's Miguel Cabrera, Los Angeles' Mike Trout and New York's Robinson Cano. The winner will be announced Nov...
A few more Red Sox notes that have developed as Tuesday rolls into Wednesday: -The Red Sox are NOT involved in the Justin Upton trade talks anymore, reports Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Arizona wants a third baseman or shortstop back, and the Red Sox will not part with Will Middlebrooks or Jose Iglesias at [...]
