Roy Halladay’s frustrations came to a boil five nights earlier when his latest attempt to revive his career took a turn for the wild before he could complete five innings. Less than four months off shoulder surgery the 36-year-old Halladay sounded like a defeated man. Although he had hardly been effective Halladay criticized the media for being too negative in assessing his progress. Halladay is nothing if not an incredibly proud and competitive creature however and the three-plus months of rehab weren’t going to be for naught. On Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park in what very well may have been the final South Philly appearance of his career Doc dialed up a winning performance against the Miami Marlins. Halladay held the Marlins to one run in six innings while Chase Utley fueled the offense with three hits including his second three-run home run in as many days as the Phils rolled to a 6-4 victory. The start was Halladay’s finest in five games since returning from a three-month stay on the disabled list. Halladay allowed four hits – just one for extra bases – while walking three. Halladay had allowed seven hits and 10 walks in his two previous outings. A free agent at the end of the year Halladay took the same mound he once hurled a postseason no-hitter and helped guide the Phillies to their eighth win in their last 11 games. Halladay used his new repertoire a less-intimidating sinker and cutter but still-effective curves and changeups to work his way through the Miami lineup. Armed with a three-run lead after three innings Halladay’s biggest test came in the fifth.
