Wow.  If you missed tonight’s game, you really missed something, to say the least…

The Mets won 5-2 tonight on the strength of Jordany Valdespin‘s first big league hit, which also happened to be his first big league pinch-hit, and his first big league homer.  Oh, and it was of the three-run variety, in the ninth inning off Jonathan Papelbon.  For my money this was by far the most exciting moment in this young season.  This came after Mike Nickeas had a great at bat against Papelbon right before Valdespin’s bomb.  Nickeas fought off a bunch of tough pitches before he was able to line a double into the left field corner, pushing Ike Davis to third and setting up runners in scoring position with two outs.  Then Valdespin delivered, as the Mets seem to consistently this year, driving in runs with two outs.  All 5 of the Mets runs tonight were driven in with two outs, as David Wright hit a two run double in the 6th off of Roy Halladay to tie the game up.  Although it was a great game tonight…

It wasn’t all gravy tonight…

Josh Thole took a shoulder to the head in the eighth inning on a slide/collision at home plate.  So far it doesn’t look good, and according to SNY’s postgame interview with Assistant GM Ricco it’s looking like they’re testing Thole for a concussion.

On the pitching front, after giving up two runs in the first two innings Jonathon Niese was able to fight off a tough start and give the Mets 5 good, not great, innings of work.  The best thing about Niese’s start tonight was the way he was able to keep the team in the game.  However, Parnell wasn’t the only one keeping the Mets in the game as Bobby Parnell was able to wiggle the Mets out of trouble (that he got them into) in both the seventh and eighth innings to preserve the tie.

What a great win for the Mets tonight.  Tomorrow they are back at it in Philly when the Mets send Miguel Batista to the bump against Joe Blanton.

Let’s go Mets.
