Stan Musial, by any measure one of the greatest ever to play the game of baseball, died yesterday at his St. Louis-area home. He was 92. The St. Louis Cardinals signed Musial as a pitcher in 1937, but he didn’t spend much time on the mound. In his 22 seasons with the Cardinals (from 1941–1963, taking a break to serve in the Navy in 1945), “Stan the Man” compiled 3,630 hits, a career batting average of .331, and a career OPS of .976. Musial played in 24 All-Star Games* (tied for most all-time with Willie Mays), won 7 National League batting titles and 3 National League Most Valuable Player Awards, and led the Cardinals to 3 World Series titles. In 2010 he won a Presidential Medal of Freedom. He also played a mean harmonica. Here is Musial in 1997 leading an audience in a rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”: * * * * ** Musial was able to play in 24 All-Star Games in 22 seasons because there were two All-Star games in 1961 and 1962.
