Found June 21, 2013 on Rumors and Rants:
The San Diego Padres are clearly one of the biggest surprises of the 2013 Major League Baseball season so far. After a 6-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers Thursday night, the Friars are just 2.5 games out of first place in the National League West. During Thursday night’s win the Padres did what they’ve done all season and made some spectacular defensive plays. Three catches in particular were simply mind-boggling. What made the plays even more impressive was that they were all made by guys who weren’t expected to be starters at the beginning of the season. The first play was made by second baseman Logan Forsythe as he tracked a shallow fly ball into center field. Forsythe ranged back and made a great over-the-shoulder grab to record the first out in the top of the seventh in a 2-2 game. On the very next play, left fielder Chris Denorfia reached into the stands to snag a fly ball in foul territory before falling into the seats himself. How he managed to catch the ball and hang ont...

Jesus Guzman Learns From His Gross Display of Exuberance

On Tuesday night Jesus Guzman hit a 2 run homer at AT&T Park to give the Padres a short lived lead over the San Francisco Giants. Hitting the HR was great. I mean, I thought it was great. I was excited. The problem with my excitement however was that it was more subdued than the excitement exhibited by Jesus Guzman as he broke into his HR trot. Let’s break down this ugly display...

Matt Vasgersian Says Nice Things About Padres Public on the Darren Smith Show

Yesterday I had the good fortune of driving around aimlessly for the better part of an hour. I say good fortune because it put me in the window of Darren Smith’s show (12-3 pm on the Mighty 1090) which I don’t get to listen to nearly enough. I was excited to hear Darren interview Matt Vasgersian who, incidentally, was kind enough to take part in a live chat with us here at Padres...

Force-Ranking The Padres Roster

As much as I’d love for it to be, writing for Padres Public isn’t my main occupation. It really isn’t an occupation at all. By night I’m Nate from The Vocal Minority but by day and occasionally night I’m Nathan, retail manager. I wear an apron with a name badge and everything. This is what happens when you drop out of college. One of the things we do as managers that separates us...

Padres And The Expectation Game

“All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence; then success is sure. “ - Mark Twain As I sit here and write this the Padres are exactly at .500, 3 games back of 1st, and are about to start a 4-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Jason Marquis is starting and I’ll likely have to update this opening paragraph to account for whatever it is he does. But more...

Padres' Jedd Gyorko counting down the days to returning

San Diego Padres Rookie of the Year candidate Jedd Gyorko cannot wait to get back into the lineup. In fact, as MLB.com's Corey Brock indicates, Gyorko is counting down the days -- literally out loud. Brock notes that Gyorko walked around the clubhouse on Wednesday, June 19, proclaiming "six days" and counting -- multiple times. Gyorko went on the 15-day disabled...

Zombies Throw Out First Pitch At Padres Game

College night at Petco Park quickly took a weird turn when the catcher receiving the first pitch turned out to be a day walker.  Numerous folks dressed up like the walking dead then proceeded to do what zombies do: walk around like zombies.  Don’t worry, this isn’t the beginning of the zombie apocalypse, just another fun trick teams do to get fans excited about being at the...

Padres 5, Dodgers 2

Dodgers-Padres Preview

Although no one in baseball has issued more walks than the San Diego Padres' Jason Marquis, he hasn't lost in almost two months. Marquis goes for a ninth consecutive victory and fourth in a row over the Los Angeles Dodgers, who visit Petco Park for the first time since April's bench-clearing brawl Thursday night. After giving up a season-high seven runs in 4 2-3 innings...
