There is nothing better, as a baseball guy, than watching a city’s bourgeoning baseball culture suddenly spring to life en masse, like Washington did Tuesday night. Those fans had practically nothing to legitimately root, root, root for until this game. I’m sure there are people who considered themselves Nationals ‘die-hards’ before, but this performance literally changes everything. As it should.
I’m happier for the fans than anything else. I know what it’s like. I was there on May 6, 1998. OK, I wasn’t really there, I watched Kerry Wood obliterate the Houston Astros alone on TV from my windowless office at a rinky-dink ballpark in Kenosha, WI…but like a couple hundred thousand or so Washingtonians, hopefully someday I will convince myself that I was.
