All the A's needed was for Stephen Vogt to get seriously hurt and it appeared he did in the sixth inning on Wednesday. With John Jaso having a concussion and Derek Norris a broken toe Vogt was the only healthy catcher on Oakland's roster so when manager Bob Melvin accompanied by assistant trainer Walt Horn hurried to check on Vogt it was a here-we-go-again moment. Fortunately for the A's Vogt was OK to stay in the game. Unfortunately for the A's the run-scoring play on which Vogt was knocked over by Dustin Ackley was a momentum-changer in a 5-3 A's loss. "We're lucky to have Stephen Vogt" Melvin said before the game "but we're down our two catchers with Derek and Jaso and that's not desirable. You deal with injuries and go forward but losing both your catchers can be tough. "But Stephen Vogt has done a nice job for us." The A's led 3-2 in the sixth inning and A.J. Griffin had two outs and two strikes on Brendan Ryan who hit a two-run double down the line in left past the A's bullpen. Yoenis Céspedes threw a perfect one-hopper to Vogt who tagged the charging Ackley before falling to the ground his back and the backside of his head making hard contact. Vogt stayed down for several moments and the prospect of third baseman Josh Donaldson the emergency catcher being used became a reality. "Josh does a pretty good job where he is" Melvin said. "It's nice to have that dynamic in a guy that can do that but we certainly don't want to have to put him behind the plate."
