The Reds won on Saturday. This is not an unimportant development for a team that is coming off a series loss to the Cubs and had dropped its series opener to the Brewers while trying to hold down a playoff spot. The Reds beat the Brewers 7-3 at Miller Park but manager Dusty Baker wasn't exactly pleased afterward. "We're playing ugly baseball" Baker said. "I'm seeing things I haven't seen in a long time. Even though we're winning I'm not real happy because I'm seeing some things over the course of a year that I haven't had a team do especially running the bases like this. I'm just in shock sometime. “My general manager Al Rosen he'd be upset when we won. I talked to Bill Walsh he was the same way. "Sometimes you can win but if you keep playing like that it's going to cost you" Baker said. "(Former Giants general manager) Al Rosen sometimes wasn't mad at all after a loss because we played hard and played fundamentally sound but you just lose sometimes. Sometimes you get beat." The Reds had one inning end at third base and then saw what could have been another insurance run cut down at the plate in the ninth. In the fifth Todd Frazier was caught stealing third with Homer Bailey at the plate meaning Bailey had to lead off the sixth. Then in the ninth inning Joey Votto was gunned down at home -- and didn't slide -- for the second out in the ninth. "When you play ugly games at this level and you play them this late in the season and you're making the same mistakes it makes you wonder about the baseball intellect of the team" Baker said. "It's something we've got to be working on all spring and continue to work on." In the end though the team got the win thanks to both small ball and the long ball. Votto and Shin-Soo Choo each had a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly and Baker called on Aroldis Chapman in the eighth inning to help nail down the team's 83rd win of the season. Friday the Reds lost the opening game to the Brewers and that coupled with a Nationals win brought Washington 4 1/2 games behind the Reds for the second National League wild card spot. With a win on Saturday for the Reds and just 13 games remaining time is on the Reds' side.
