MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Joey Votto's RBI double broke a scoreless tie in the ninth, and the Cincinnati Reds held on to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 on Wednesday. Drew Stubbs singled off Brewers closer John Axford with two outs, and Votto lined a ball over the glove of second baseman Rickie Weeks to score Stubbs from first. Brandon Phillips then hit a bloop single, driving in Votto for a 2-0 lead. Ryan Braun homered off Sean Marshall in the bottom of the ninth, his 10th of the season, to cut the lead to 2-1. Marshall allowed a pair of two-out singles to Jonathan Lucroy and Norichika Aoki and was replaced by Logan Ondrusek, who walked George Kottaras to load the bases. Ondrusek got Travis Ishikawa to pop out, earning his first save. It was the 1,500th major league victory for Reds manager Dusty Baker. Axford (0-2) took the loss. The Reds won two out of three games from the struggling Brewers. Cincinnati's ninth-inning fireworks came after an impressive pitchers' duel bet...

Who's hot and who's not right now

Johnny Cueto is among several Cincy players who are heating up in May The month of April can be deceiving in many ways as it relates to the performance of MLBers. Players can get off to hot starts only to fizzle out in the remaining five months of the season. Or on the other hand, a player may also labor through a rough April only to turn it on as the weather gets warmer...

Brewers are encouraged by Green's instincts

MILWAUKEE Taylor Green knows he doesn't have the natural tools that some star baseball players have. Drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 25th round of the 2005 MLB Draft, Green didn't start in pro baseball as a highly touted prospect, either. But since he started in the Brewers organization in 2006, they've seen something else in Green that higher draft picks or...

Brewers extend contracts of Melvin, Roenicke

MILWAUKEE After an unprecedented year of success for the Brewers in 2011, with Milwaukee winning the NL Central and coming just short of a World Series appearance, the organization announced Tuesday that it has extended the contracts of current general manager Doug Melvin and manager Ron Roenicke. Melvin's extension also includes a promotion, officially naming him the Brewers...

Melvin can maintain as well as rebuild

MILWAUKEE When Brewers general manager Doug Melvin took over in late September 2002, after another disappointing season in Milwaukee, the city had meager expectations for its baseball team. A decade straight of losing seasons will do that. So when Melvin set out to rebuild the Brewers, he started with a seemingly simple goal in winning back the city of Milwaukee. "When...

Greinke puts Miller Park streak on the line

The Milwaukee Brewers are unbeaten when Zack Greinke takes the mound at Miller Park. Ryan Braun's potential absence combined with Johnny Cueto getting the ball for the Cincinnati Reds may put that streak in serious jeopardy. Greinke might not have the NL MVP behind him as he goes for another home victory in the conclusion of this three-game set with the Reds on Wednesday afternoon...

Braun: 'We have to find a way to win games'

MILWAUKEE Despite the team's well-noted struggles at the plate this season, Milwaukee Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said before Wednesday's game against the Reds that if the team's pitching staff had been throwing the past month like it had last season, then the team could've easily overcome its woeful hitting in the season's first month. There's reason to...

Off day observations

With the off day and the Reds seemingly on a roll I thought I would take a post to look at how the Reds are faring so far this season. First, the Reds have arguably the best pitcher in Baseball at the top of their rotation. With a 1.12 ERA, Cueto is the second best staring pitcher in baseball (based on ERA alone.) He has 4 wins compared to the 0 wins Dempster (1.02 ERA) has. Cueto...

What Will Gonzalez's Injury Cost The Brewers?

Photo: Jeff Chiu/APThe Brewers learned yesterday that Alex Gonzalez has a torn ACL, meaning they have lost three regulars (totaling somewhere around five wins) for the rest of the season. In a year that has been almost nothing but bad news, this may be the worst break yet. The Brewers have already lost Chris Narveson and Mat Gamel, but they will likely be able to recoup most of their...

The Milwaukee Brewers announced that they have finalized contract extension for manager Ron Roenicke and General Manager Doug Melvin. Aaron Gleeman of NBCSports adds that Melvin's deal “runs through 2015,” and Roenicke’s deal “runs through 2014″ with team option for 2015. In 2011, his first year as a manager, Roenicke led the team to their first NL Central title with...
