Rios
It’s an off day for the Chicago White Sox, but it’s turning out to be one of the biggest news days of the year for the team. Earlier this afternoon, outfielder Alex Rios was claimed by the Texas Rangers, while Casper Wells was claimed and will be joining the Philadelphia Phillies. Rios’ case is much different than Wells’ at this point, as the White Sox would probably like to work out a trade with the Rangers rather than let him walk for nothing. The Sox and Rangers have 48 hours to work out a trade, but according to Danny Knobler of CBS Sports, Rios was put on waivers Monday and the deadline to move him is tomorrow (Friday). Essentially, that means Rios was claimed earlier in the week, but the news didn’t break until now (props to the Rangers and White Sox P.R. departments for keeping that under wraps for this long). If a trade isn’t worked out with the Rangers, the Sox can pull him off waivers. However, that means Rios won’t be going anywhere for the rest of this season, as players who don’t clear waivers have to be traded to the team the claim was awarded to. All teams make use of waivers in August with veteran players to gauge trade interest heading into the off-season, but Rios’ case is different because it’s known that the White Sox want to move him. Reports say Texas did have interest in Rios before the deadline, and that’s probably only gone up with the suspension of Nelson Cruz. Needless to say, this will be an interesting situation to watch over the next 24 hours. As far as Casper Wells goes, the White Sox are giving him the Philadelphia outright, so you can say your final goodbyes to Wells now. Despite being an outfielder with a .167 average, Wells will likely be remember most for the scoreless inning he tossed against the Indians during a blowout last month. Philadelphia will be Casper’s fifth, yes, fifth team this SEASON. The most intriguing part about the Wells move is trying to predict the corresponding move that will come with it. It has not been announced yet, but odds are it will be Part III of Blake Tekotte or the newly-acquired Avisail Garcia. GSB has its money on Tekotte, as the Sox probably want Garcia to continue getting every day at-bats, and it would not make much sense to put Dayan Viciedo, Alejandro De Aza, or Alex Rios in platoon scenarios. However, if Alex Rios moved to Texas, you can bet your bottom dollar that Avisail Garcia will be in the starting outfield for the rest of the season.
