The Washington Nationals have signed former Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Chad Durbin, according to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN. The deal is at the minor league level and allows Durbin to make the big league roster if he performs well in spring training. Durbin posted a 2-2 record and 5.53 ERA in 68.1 innings with the Cleveland Indians in 2011. Previously, he had pitched three years with the Phillies, primarily as a seventh-inning man. Durbin was at his best for the 2008 team that won the World Series, going 5-4 with a 2.87 ERA in 87.2 innings. For his career, the 34-year old has a 38-46 record with a 5.10 ERA for five different teams. Durbin joins former Phillies players Brad Lidge and Jayson Werth on the Nationals.

Player Profile #101: Jordan Zimmermann | SP | WAS

If Jordan Zimmermann can put together a full, 200-inning season, he’ll be a fantasy force to be reckoned with. His walk rate went from very good to pretty much elite last season, and there’s definitely room for growth with his strikeout rate. In fact, if Zimmermann made the standard 33 starts last season instead of just 26, his PSR would have risen from 0.79 to 2.47,...

Player Profile #94: Stephen Strasburg | SP | WAS

If we learned anything from Jordan Zimmermann‘s 2011 season, it was how the Nationals elect to ease their pitchers back from Tommy John surgery. Zimmermann pitched 161 1/3 innings last season, and we can likely expect the same total from Stephen Strasburg this season. When he does pitch, though, you can be assured of two things: strikeouts and more strikeouts. It will probably...

Future Shock Blog: Edwin Jackson and the fall of 2003 by Kevin Goldstein

The story of the day, in what has been a slow news week, is Edwin Jackson signing a one-year deal with the Washington Nationals. There are plenty of people out there doing the smart, prudent thing by talking about what this means for the team in 2012, and how a crowded fight for the final spot in the Nationals rotation will work out. Unfortunately, that's not how my mind works...
