The Pirates continued to revamp their roster this offseason by trading for Brewers third baseman Casey McGehee last night in exchange for reliever Jose Veras.

The Buccos appeared to be set in the field before the trade but with McGehee on his way to the Burgh, if Pedro Alvarez doesn’t start playing a second overall pick…or if he just continues to tuck his ears into his cap…he could be out of a job thanks to the McGehee deal.

For those of you that just look at McGehee’s numbers from last year and think the Pirates have enough sub .250 hitters, you’re right they do, but McGehee isn’t one of them.

The only reason he was dealt out of Milwaukee’s is because Aramis Ramirez’s tour of the NL Central is making a stop in Wisconsin. If a team is spending $26 million on a three-year deal for a 33-year-old third baseman, you can bet than not going to start a white-trash guy from California over him. And the Buccos were okay with that.

McGehee did only hit .223 last year but his 13 homers and 67 RBIs would’ve been good enough for third on the Buccos last year. Plus, he’s only been in the bigs for three years, and last year was his first down season.

McGehee is a career .265 hitter and hit 52 bombs in his 428 games as a Brewer to go with his 237 RBIs and .762 OPS (it was over .800 in ’09 and ’10). In 2010 though, he hit .285 with 38 doubles, 23 homeruns, and 104 RBIs. And he was named the Brewers MVP – not too shabby with names like Braun and Fielder in the lineup.

At the very least, this move gives Pedro even more incentive to produce more than he did last year (shouldn’t be too hard), knowing that the Buccos have a very capable reserve waiting to steal his starting spot. And even if Pedro gets hurt…again, McGehee can step in and not be a downgrade.

With Derrek Lee declining the Buccos offer, it looks like the first base job is Garrett Jones’s to lose, especially now that he doesn’t quite fit the speedy look in the PNC Park outfield with Nate McLouth back in town. The same goes for Jones; if his numbers drop or if he has trouble at first, don’t be surprised to see McGehee be plugged in there.

He’s got a good bat and he’s solid in the field…and he looks like a yinzer with his shaved head and weird beard/ goatee thing. All-in-all it was a pretty solid move since it only cost the Buccos a mediocre pitcher, a position the Pirates have more of than they know what to do with.

Who knows if this Billy Bean lineup will work for the Bucs, but they SEEM to be making the right moves so far. And even if they don’t work out, is 20 really that much worse than 19?

Peace, McGehee!

In 2009, Casey McGehee surprised Brewers fans when he revealed himself to be a not-entirely-****** (and, at times, even good) guy at doing baseball while filling in for an injured Rickie Weeks and an OHMYGODSOTERRIBLE!!! Bill E. Hall at second and third base. He chased that partial season of partial OK-ness with a 23-home run, 104-RBI showing for the 2010 Ken Macha cyborg squad Brewers...

Casey McGehee is a Pirate

Well that didn’t take long. Mere hours after signing Aramis Ramirez to man the keystone for the next three seasons, the Milwaukee Brewers traded former third baseman Casey McGehee to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Jose Veras. While McGehee exceeded expectations with the Brewers initially — he slumped badly last season — and was eventually replaced by Jerry Hairston...

Pirates Tender All Eligible Players, Including Newly Acquired McGehee

According to Tim Williams at Pirates Prospects and MLB reporter Jenifer Langosch, the Pittsburgh Pirates have offered arbitration to all eligible players, including new infielder Casey McGehee, who was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers today. For a list of the players the Pirates had to tender, check out my slideshow from this morning. You can also see each player’s projected...

Brewers trade McGehee for surprisingly useful reliever

This probably shouldn't be as much of a surprise as it was, but the Brewers capped off a busy day by trading Casey McGehee to the Pittsburgh Pirates for reliever Jose Veras. With Aramis Ramirez signing with the Brewers earlier in the day and the non-tender deadline at 11 p.m. Central, today seemed like a good bet to be McGehee's last with the Brewers one way or another...

Aramis Signing Opens up Possible Trade Option for Tigers

29 year old C.McGehee could be on trade market with Ramirez signing With the recent signing of 3B free agent Aramis Ramirez going to the Milwaukee Brewers for 3 years $36M (according to Brewers.com),  the Brewers now former 3B Casey McGehee could be on the trading soon. This could be a blessing in disguise for Detroit Tigers fans that wanted us to sign Ramirez, if we can jump...

Casey McGehee's Rough Year

Casey McGehee is a Brewer. We have always hated Casey McGehee. Casey McGehee is a Pirate. We have always loved Casey McGehee. When the Pirates picked up Casey McGehee last night, my initial instinct was to remember that how awful he was in 2011 and how overrated I thought he was in 2010. Being overrated doesn't mean that a player isn't useful, of course (see: Neil Walker...

Bucs acquire Casey McGehee

The Pirates obtained third baseman Casey McGehee from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for relief pitcher Jose Veras, the Pirates announced Monday.

This Is Getting McRidiculous

The Pirates have traded Jose Veras for Casey McGehee. You cannot make this crap up. I'm pretty sure Neal Huntington is my biggest fan or something. As if having four Mc's on the team wasn't ridiculous enough, he has gone out and acquired two more this offseason. Andrew McCutchen, Nate McLouth, Daniel McCutchen, Michael McKenry, James McDonald, and now Casey McGehee...

Casey McGehee Is Now Very Available

The Brewers spent their remaining pile of money on Aramis Ramirez today, locking him into a three year, $36ish million deal to take over at third base for the club. While most people will see this move as evidence that the Brewers are out on Prince Fielder, I think there’s another Seattle tie-in here that should be more aggressively pursued. In part one of my offseason plan...
