The Seattle Mariners spent the first one-third of the season looking to see if Ichiro Suzuki was a good fit as

the No. 3 hitter and the last few weeks giving Dustin Ackley a shot at being the leadoff man.

On Friday, all of that changed.

Manager Eric Wedge has installed Ichiro back as the leadoff man, the position he had for the first 11

years of his big-league career. Ackley will now bat second, where he began the season, and Kyle Seager, the

team's leader in both batting average and RBIs, will hit third.

"I wanted to make that move now," Wedge said before the Mariners fell victim to the Chicago White Sox's

ninth consecutive win, a 7-4 decision born out of three unearned runs in the eighth that broke the game

open. "We're a couple of months into the season. I want to put Ichiro in the best position to succeed.

"I think to get him back to (batting) leadoff, where he's had the most experience and is the most

comfortable, that's the best way to do it. If he can get himself going up top, it's only going to help us

as a ballclub."

"Ichiro came into Friday with a .271 average that was second best on the club to Seager's .278, but had

driven in only 17 runs, the fifth-best total on the club.

Seager, who was the third-round pick in the 2009 draft out of North Carolina, where he played with

Ackley, was 4-for-6 with doubles as the No. 3 hitter Wednesday, when Ichiro was given a day off, and came

back Friday with a two-run homer and an RBI single, giving him a team-best 31 RBIs.

The problem with the lineup is that Ichiro, Ackley and Seager are all left-handers, making it easier for

opposing managers to match up against them. Wedge has talked about the need for a right-hander to break up

that grouping, but for the moment at least, he'll go with the lefties.
