The 2012 Topps Baseball Card set hits the store shelves on Wednesday. Earlier this week, an image of one of the set's most creative cards was released to the public: If this doesn't look familiar to you, that's an image of the infamous "Rally Squirrel" on Skip Schumaker's card in place of the usual photo of Schumaker diving at an infield single. Topps claims that this card is the first card in it's history not to include a head/face photo of the player (that *is* Schumaker's foot on the left there). As far as creativity goes, this card's a winner - even if the Rally Squirrel thing got old after about two minutes. As the set gets ready to be sold to consumers for the first time, however, I find myself in possession of a few other "special" cards included in the 2012 Topps set that the company hasn't yet told anyone about. As you might have guessed, the Schumaker/Rally Squirrel pairing isn't the only player/animal grouping...

Cardinals' Rally Squirrel Gets Baseball Card, Upstaging Skip Schumaker Once Again (Photo)

Cardinals outfielder Skip Schumaker's connection to the Rally Squirrel in St. Louis is going to last forever. Or, at least as long as few small pieces of cardboard hold up. MLB.com points out that Schumaker's 2012 Topps baseball card will feature just his right foot. The rest of the card is reserved for one pesky squirrel who became a national celebrity during last year&...

Red Schoendienst celebrates his 89th birthday

Hall of Famer Red Schoendienst has done it all for the St. Louis Cardinals – All-Star player, World Champion manager and now sage adviser to the scores who followed. Making his St. Louis debut in 1945, the switch-hitting second baseman played 15 seasons with the Cardinals, including in the 1946 World Series. The 10-time National League All-Star also appeared in two more Series...

Cardinals' health challenges a concern

I'm worried about the St. Louis Cardinals -- and not just because they've lost first baseman Albert Pujols, manager Tony La Russa and, at least for the time being, pitching coach Dave Duncan. Those departures alone are enough to give one pause about the defending World Series champions, but my concern runs deeper. This is a physically fragile club. Free-agent right-hander...

Can Oswalt Have His Cake And Eat It Too?

Roy Oswalt wants to pitch for the St. Louis Cardinals or the Texas Rangers.  Roy Oswalt wants to start and is not open to moving to the bullpen.  Roy Oswalt also wants a one year deal worth ten million dollars. The Cardinals and Rangers have full pitching staffs that will see a hurler from each team spend time in the bullpen that have seen time on the mound at the beginning of...

Player Profile #91: Adam Wainwright | SP | STL

At this time last year there were many people, myself included, touting Adam Wainwright as a top five starting pitcher and maybe the best pitcher overall. But that all changed when Wainwright walked off the mound one fateful February day last spring and baseball fans, Jonny Gomes aside, heard the two words they hate the most…Tommy. John. The good news, though, is that Tommy...

Ship McClellan To The Padres

It does seem odd that the St. Louis Cardinals are willing to send do-everything pitcher Kyle McClellan somewhere else.  He’s a local boy.  He moved through the ranks as a starting pitcher but willingly switched to the bullpen to help the big club, becoming a dependable late-innings guy.  Last season, after Adam Wainwright went down, he willingly switched back to the rotation...

First Bernie, Then Beltran

With Carlos Beltran leaving the Mets via trade and then signing with the Cardinals, there appears to be a lot of nostalgia going around about his career. In fact, it seems lately that Carlos Beltran and “Hall of Fame,” have been seen together in several discussions with Mets fans. Personally, I think the Hall of Fame is getting a bit too watered down. I love that a guy like Ron...

Balpark Village: A Failure Slowly Revealed

Ballpark Village. It's been a whipping post for this site since our inception and as the Cardinals admission of failure slowplay moves towards it's ultimate cresendo, another tasteful admission of failure has been launched. It's called the St. Louis Cardinals Virtual Hall Of Fame.A well constructed web site worth lauding. You know, if it had an accompanying Hall Of Fame...

Roy Oswalt and the Rangers

This post is quite a bit shorter than our normal fare here. We’re going to experiment with some quicker news analysis pieces for things that are still churning through the rumor mill. Don’t worry, these pieces won’t take the place of the more in-depth articles you’ve come to expect from the site. A few weeks ago, I talked about how Roy Oswalt could end up...

Report: Red Sox Still Have a 'Great Chance' to Sign Roy Oswalt

The Red Sox may still be an option for Roy Oswalt after all. After reporting that Oswalt was nearing a deal with St. Louis last week, ESPN reports the Sox still have "a great chance" of signing the veteran to a one-year deal. The 34-year-old hurler has also expressed interest in the Rangers. But with Colby Lewis, Yu Darvish, Derek Holland, Neftali Feliz, Matt Harrison and...

BaseballHQ on Cardinals Prospects: 2012

In the first of a three-part series, we highlight the top 15 St. Louis Cardinals prospects from the Minor League Baseball Analyst with the details as to why they’re ranked where they are.

Oswalt not short on suitors for his services

Roy Oswalt has been in the top six in the National League Cy Young Award balloting six times. If you need a guy for Game 7 in a World Series, you could do a whole lot worse than the man from Mississippi.

Cardinals Player Insurance and Analytics

St. Louis Cardinals president Bill DeWitt III discusses insuring player contracts, a salary cap and how the club evaluates players using a modified Bill James stat.

No decision yet from Roy Oswalt as several teams remain in the mix
