Another Cubs Blog:
The Red Sox have just released Josh Bard. He’s a switch-hitting back-up catcher. The Cubs are choosing between Paul Bako and Koyie Hill for that spot as of now. There’s little doubt that Bard is better than both of them.
Koyie Hill’s average projected wOBA for 2009 (rough estimation) is .252. He’s probably about 2 runs below average on defense (probably be best to just assume he’s average). Paul Bako’s average projected wOBA for 2009 is .265. Average is around .335 to .340 so both of these guys are awful hitters. Paul Bako is slightly above average on defense. According to Colin Wyers he was about 6 runs above average last year.
Josh Bard’s average projected wOBA for 2009 is about .331. Bard doesn’t catch very many basestealers, but it’s not like Paul Bako or Koyie Hill are going to keep guys from trying to steal a base this season. Bard was slightly below average on defense last season.
Bard is most likely the equivalent on defense of Koyie Hill, but probably a slightly worse than Paul Bako. However, Bard’s bat is significantly better than Bako’s. I think the Cubs should sign him. What do you think?
