Without much time to get re-acclimated to his new-slash-old position, general manager Terry Ryan addressed a critical need for the team. Yes, it isn’t as a sexy move similar to the one that brought JJ Hardy to the Twins two years ago at this time but the pending signing of Jamey Carroll is a step in the right direction. Carroll, a soon-to-be 38-year-old utility infielder, is not an appetizing addition at first blush. He has little power, little range and little experience as a full-time player. What he does offer is unparalleled patience at the plate and sure-handedness in the field. It is only after you inspect his track record and his skill set that you should recognize that he is what the Twins need for 2012 and quite possibly the most cost-effective way of filling that need. Defensively, he has seen a sharp decline in the amount balls he can get to. Carroll stepped into the shortstop role on a more regular basis with the Dodgers the past two seasons when Rafael Furcal was...

Fantasy Baseball Risers – Jamey Carroll

When the Twins signed Jamey Carroll a few days ago, they were routinely mocked by the critics. A 37 year old utility player finally landing his first everyday job, as a starting SS? In the words of the Messenger who challenged King Leonidis in 300, This is Madness! However, as a fantasy baseball player we’re not too concerned with the salaries players earn, or about the quality...

Adios Carroll, You Will be Missed!

He didn’t hit a single home-run as a Dodger, has a below average arm and was never a full time starter but Jamey Carroll was one of the most important pieces on the Dodgers the last two seasons. Signed to much hilarity, the Dodgers needing a true bat at the time, and not some light hitting infielder, Jamey Carroll was blasted by fans but quickly became a fan favorite for his hustle...

The Ballad of Jamey Carroll

Last night, the Baseball Twitterworld was set on fire with a series of Tweets that claimed that the Miami Marlins were about to make a huge splash on their third day of existence by signing shortstop Jose Reyes. People RT'd the initial reports and the quick denials and speculated whether the Marlins would move Hanley Ramirez to third base or trade him. During baseball's...

Newburgh's Jamey Carroll may become Twins' starting shortstop

After two years in Los Angeles, free agent Jamey Carroll may become the Minnesota Twins' new starting shortstop at the ripe old age of 38.

The offseason as a Pirate fan

I wrote this about last weekend's Jamey Carroll Sweepstakes over at the Outside Corner. I'm planning on making my winter posts over there part of a recurring theme: the winter is a rough time to be the fan of any team except for a few of baseball's biggest spenders.

Rumor: Tigers Interested In Martin Prado

Jamey Carroll left them at the alter and now the Tigers are looking elsewhere. According to Jon Morosi of Fox Sports, the Tigers are looking at Braves utility man, Martin Prado. The Tigers seem to be pretty desperate for a second baseman. With Carroll to the Twins and Hill re-upping with Arizona, the 2nd base market is pretty thin. The Tigers have a little wiggle room financially...

Jamey Carroll Is A Good Fit, But Pricey and Risky

Ellis Itis

Mike Scioscia‘s Tragic Illness is none too happy with the Dodgers signing Mark Ellis to play second base: Mark Ellis is coming off a .288 OBP and is the proud owner of a better wOBA than Jamey Carroll exactly one time going back to 2006, yet he’s going to pull down about a million dollars more per season than the Carroll contract we didn’t even particularly like. Ellis...

Rockies Notes: Carroll, Prado, Sizemore, Street

The Rockies' aggressiveness in their pursuit of Jamey Carroll could indicate that they're ready to make some bold moves this winter, writes Troy Renck of The Denver Post.  The team even offered the veteran a multi-year deal, according to a source with direct knowledge of the talks, even though they clearly preferred the 37-year-old on a one-year contract.  After losing...

Dodgers Lose Two Starters in Two Days

First Rod Barajas (85 starts at catcher in 2011) bolts for the Pirates. Now the Twins have signed Jamey Carroll (111 starts between second and short) to a two-year deal. "It's not general manager Ned Colletti's style to go into Spring Training without a veteran option at virtually every position," writes Ken Gurnick at Dodgers.com, so bring on the old guys!

Renck: Rockies look more aggressive in offseason market

It is often in a loss that a team reveals what it will do to win. The Rockies were as aggressive as anyone in pursuing free-agent infielder Jamey Carroll. They wanted him for the clubhouse, for the lineup and for second base.

Second Baseman Going Fast

One of the Tigers biggest needs this off season is to fill the hole at second base.  Aaron Hill was one of the names thrown and he’s now re-signed with the Diamondbacks and Jamey Carroll signed with the Twins. So there’s little surprise that Jon Paul Morosi broke a story that the Tigers were looking [...]
