The Chicago Cubs made their second trade of this still somewhat young offseason, but it was a significantly bigger move than the first. While it has yet to become official, as it’s expected to be announced on Friday, the Cubs have agreed to deal setup man Sean Marshall to the division rival Cincinnati Reds in exchange for Travis Wood and a pair of prospects. The trade of Marshall is just the first of quite a few established  players from the current roster that are expected to be shopped heavily this winter. That’s a list that includes names like, but not limited to, Carlos Zambrano, Alfonso Soriano, Marlon Byrd, and Matt Garza. As the days pass, it becomes more and more clear what type of rebuilding effort that is taking place on the North Side and that we’re talking a few years before the Cubs might even be ready to contend for the division, let alone a championship. But with the Marshall deal, the immediate concern is what happens to the bullpen without him. Obv...

At one point, Cubs president Theo Epstein said Sean Marshall ‘‘might be the most valuable left-handed reliever in all of baseball.’’ After trading him to the Cincinnati Reds on Friday for unproven young starter Travis Wood and two prospects, Epstein called the deal ‘‘the type of move that fits our general direction.’’ It’s a direction that also might include trading...

They weren’t factors in the bidding for Japanese pitching star Yu Darvish and aren’t serious players in the Prince Fielder sweepstakes. Recent transactions: my take

LHP Sean Marshall and two prospects to the Reds for LHP Travis Wood Probably a win-win for both sides. The Reds are making a real run at the NL Central crown, having gutted their farm system for Mat Latos and now, dealing five years of Travis Wood for one of Sean Marshall. We can debate the long-term implications all we want, but Wood at best is a #4/#5 starter while Marshall is...

This is usually the time of year where I take two months to breathe. Don’t panic, I’m still here and still going to go nuts with the posts when baseball heats up. I’m in football mode right now though which is no good for a baseball blogger. Reds are somewhat going all-in for 2012, that’s the only thing I liked about the Sean Marshall for Travis Wood swap...
