He started off like a bat out of hell. Before the All Star break he was 17-48 (.354). Since? Well, he’s hitting around .260 since the break and while that’s not bad – he’s completely stopped producing in other categories. Last week he hit .222 and didn’t register a single stat in any other category.

Does this mean he’s a bust?

Absolutely not. The talent is obvious and the Cubs know that he is their future at first base, but he’s still just a kid. A kid who has only been in the majors for a couple months. There are going to be some growing pains as pitchers start to attack him differently and he continues to settle in to the grind of the season.

Where does this leave his owners?

You can do one a few things.

  1. Keep him on your roster and ride the cold streak. In the hope that he comes out of it and finds his power stroke again.
  2. Trade him to either a Cubs fan or as a package with a middle of the way player and try to pull of the vaunted 2-1 deal.
  3. Go to Chicago and become his personal assistant. You get him out of his funk and he sees you for the person that you really are deep down. The two of you spend the rest of his career together and then when he retires you both move to the Catskills and get married – to each other. Then you live out the rest of your days with Anthony Rizzo and all your adopted kids.

Out of the three options I’d try and trade him. I like the idea of living with him in the Catskills but I wouldn’t be able to take the long winters. Sadly, if you’re not in a keeper league it might be a little hard to move him. Most of his value now lies in the keeper potential and if that’s your league, and you find yourself at the bottom looking up right now, Rizzo would be a guy to target.
