Zack Wheeler is becoming the anti-Matt Harvey – he keeps getting wins. Wheeler earned his fourth win in just his seventh career start this afternoon as the 23-year-old rookie delivered a decent performance in the Mets’ 7-4 win over the Braves at Citi Field. The righty was impressive at times and unimpressive at times ultimately allowing four runs but only three earned in six innings while striking out five. Wheeler who only surrendered four hits but was tagged for two homers is 4-1 with a 3.72 ERA more than respectable for the heralded call-up. Unlike his fellow phenom Harvey Wheeler has gotten strong run support – the Mets have scored 43 runs for him in his seven games an average of just over six per contest. They’re now 20-13 since Wheeler was promoted on June 18 and they’ve won five of his seven starts. Today the Met offense erupted racking up the seven runs on 14 hits and five walks. John Buck paced the attack with two hits including a double and three RBIs. Wheeler has been inconsistent in his major league career and he was high and low again this afternoon. He racked up 31 pitches in the first inning (allowing an unearned run on a double a walk and a wild pitch-strikeout). Wheeler then retired all six batters in the second and third innings but served up Dan Uggla’s two-run homer in the fourth and Freddie Freeman’s leadoff blast in the fifth one that tied the game at 4-4. So on the down side Wheeler surrendered a pair of homers and lost a 4-1 lead. On the up side he only permitted four hits struck out the five and logged six innings in a pretty efficient 95 pitches. Trailing 1-0 in the third inning the Mets scored four runs on an RBI single from Marlon Byrd an RBI groundout from Justin Turner and a two-run single from Buck. They then snapped a 4-4 tie in the sixth when Andrew Brown doubled and Daniel Murphy singled him home to put the Mets up 5-4. David Wright tripled Murphy in and Buck doubled home Wright to make it a 7-4 bulge.
