Bryce Harper is all of 19 years of age and already fans are clamoring for him to make to Washington Nationals opening day roster.

So far this spring Harper is 5-11, good for a .455 batting average. In his first year of professional baseball, Harper hit .318 with 14 home runs in 72 games in Class A, but only hit .256 with three homers in 37 games in Double A.

It appears the Nationals will be cautious with Harper, but that’s not to say the team won’t be bringing him up this season.

Here’s what Nationals GM Mike Rizzo has to say about the issue, via SI.com:

“I think we’ll see him in 2012,” he said shortly before Grapefruit League play began. “We’re not sure when. We’re going to be open-minded about early in the season, him breaking camp with us. If it’s right for him and the right fit [for us], we’ll be open-minded about it. We just have to make sure that he’s fully ready to play in the big leagues. I don’t want to bring him to the big leagues, have him struggle and fail and have to bring him back to the minor leagues. He’s going to be a terrific major league player.
