Doug Fister warned his defense Friday night: Be ready because there were going to be a lot of ground-ball outs. Proving prophetic the tall right-hander needed only 88 pitches to get through eight innings. Joaquin Benoit pitched the ninth and the Tigers’ winning streak hit six with a 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox before 41109 at Comerica Park. Fister and the defense raced through the game in 2 hours 7 minutes. He wanted the complete-game victory but understood the circumstances. “I was ready for it but Benoit is the best closer we’ve got and that’s where we’re at” said Fister (10-5). “I always want to be out there. The biggest thing tonight was (Brayan) Pena was working hard behind the plate and our defense was outstanding. Just a lot of ground balls that they picked up and made plays on.” Manager Jim Leyland said he would have considered sending Fister out in the ninth if the bottom of the order had been due up. “They started centering the ball on him a little bit” Le...

Tigers' starting rotation continues to impress

DETROIT Perhaps the most significant point to be made about the Detroit Tigers at the trade deadline was something they did not do. They were virtually the only team in baseball with absolutely no interest in obtaining a starting pitcher. Think about that for a second. Thats a truly impressive statement, and it speaks to the kind of rotation Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski...

Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera out again with injury

A day after being scratched from the Detroit Tigers’ lineup due to lingering injury issues, Miguel Cabrera was once again sidelined last night. Manager Jim Leyland wouldn’t expand on Cabrera’s status, only telling reporters – including Jason Beck of MLB.com – that the third baseman wasn’t available Saturday. Cabrera wasn’t on the field yesterday for pregame...

Six Things to Know About Peralta's Suspension

Based on Sunday’s Outside the Lines report that suspensions will be handed down on Monday, it's safe to say that Jhonny Peralta will be one of them. What does that mean for his future with the Tigers? Well, given the Jose Iglesias trade, it's highly unlikely the Tigers would be looking to resign him this off-season. However, that doesn't answer what's in store for...

Tigers beat White Sox, get perfect 8-0 homestand

DETROIT -- Miguel Cabrera and Torii Hunter were supposed to have the day off. Jhonny Peralta was supposed to be banned for baseball, and Tiger fans hadn't ever heard of Jose Iglesias a week ago. Even Bruce Rondon spent a large part of the season in Toledo after losing his job in spring training. Sunday afternoon, all five of them played key roles in Detroit's 12-inning...

Scherzer gets win 16

DETROIT -- During the last few seasons, there have been two Tigers who routinely brought helpless shrugs and awestruck comments from defeated managers and players -- Miguel Cabrera and Justin Verlander. Now there is a third. After shutting out the White Sox for 7 23 innings Saturday, improving his hard-to-believe record to 16-1, Max Scherzer got the kind of respect reserved for...

Game 2013.109: White Sox at Tigers

63-45, 1st place, 3 games up on Cle. Jhonny Peralta has nerves of steel. Over his last ten games he’s hitting .351 with 3 HR and 8 RBIs. I don’t know how he’s not vomiting every time up the plate with what he’s facing on Monday. This reminds me of that time my boss called me into his office during a summer internship. Had he seen the email? Or had he not?. Rumors were that...

Tigers 3, White Sox 0

Max Scherzer took a shutout into the eighth inning before being pulled, and the Detroit right-hander became baseball's first 16-game winner when the Tigers held on for a 3-0 victory over the punchless Chicago White Sox on Saturday night. The White Sox have lost nine straight. The Tigers have won 11 of 12, despite playing most of that stretch without slugger Miguel Cabrera. ...

The top contenders in the AL Central have been flexing their muscles lately with the Detroit Tigers winning eight straight and 12 of 13 while the Cleveland Indians have won 10 of 11.
