The Chicago White Sox have agreed to a six-year, $68 million deal with Cuban slugger Jose Abreu. The White Sox announced the move on Tuesday, about a week and a half after they reached an agreement.
The 26-year-old Abreu will receive a signing bonus of $10 million and earn $7 million in 2014.
Abreu, who defected over the summer, batted .360 (9-for-25) with three home runs and nine RBIs at the World Baseball Classic last spring. The 6-foot-3, 250-pound Abreu is expected to play either first base or fill the designated hitter role. Abreu can help bolster a White Sox offense that scored the fewest runs in the American League and hit only 148 home runs, tied for third fewest in the AL, en route to a 63-99 record one year after finishing second in the AL Central.
During his 2013 season with Cienfuegos in the the top-level league in Cuba, Abreu hit .316 with 19 home runs and 60 RBI in 83 games.

There have been no shortage of opinions regarding the Chicago White Sox’ signing of Jose Dariel Abreu. We have seen how his statistics match up to other recent Cuban defectors before the jump, as well as heard differing scouts’ opinions regarding how those stats will translate stateside. I will not try to add to either of these discussions. I think the stat comparisons to...
The Chicago White Sox have not given up interest on retaining Paul Konerko for the 2014 season, despite the recent signing of Cuban first basemen Jose Abreu.

From 2012 to 2013, the White Sox dropped 27 games in the standings, thanks to losing 22 more games this past year. The Sox also somehow saw their run differential swing by 197 runs down to -125, the third worst mark in the American League. Needless to say, there will be changes this winter.
The White Sox already filled one of their biggest needs this offseason by inking...
Word on the street is the San Francisco Giants were in the contract negotiations with Cuban Slugger Jose Abreu. They decided to withdraw themselves once the price was really starting to rise. The reason being, if they signed Abreu, they’d still have to move their best first baseman to left field. If Abreu was a left fielder I’m sure we would be talking about the big contract Abreu jus...
