Scott Elarton has been signed to a minor league contract by the Chicago White Sox. Elarton last pitched in the majors in June of 2008 with Cleveland.
Once considered part of a trio of pitchers who were going to change the Houston Astros, Elarton has largely been ineffective since his 17 win season of 2000.
Elarton won 17 games in 2000 with a 4.81 ERA and a 1.46 ERA while pitching 192.2 innings. The wins, 131 strike outs and 192.2 innings pitched were all career highs for Elarton who has gone 28-48 with a 5.91 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP since.
It goes without saying that the Astros offense, who ranked second in runs scored in the NL in 2000, was the key ingredient in Elarton’s 2000 campaign.
Needless to say I’m not giving Elarton the endorsement I gave Mike MacDougal yesterday as I simply don’t see any way he helps the White Sox or any major league team this season or any season.
