The Chicago White Sox's rotation problems seem to be headed in the direction of one step forward, two steps back.

First, there is the continued problems of right-hander Gavin Floyd, who once again fell on hard times in a 5-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday. He lasted only 4 2/3 innings, allowing five earned runs on eight hits, walking four and fanning five.

Floyd is now 1-4 with a 10.09 ERA in his last six starts, allowing 34 earned runs in 30 1/3 innings.

Worse news for the Sox came on the John Danks front, as his return from the 15-day disabled list hit an obstacle Thursday. The hope is it's an obstacle that the lefty can clear.

Two days after making a rehab start for AAA Charlotte, Danks said he felt more soreness than he expected in his injured pitching shoulder while playing catch before the finale with St. Louis.

Danks hopes to go forward with his scheduled side session Friday with the team in Los Angeles, and he'll make a determination about his next step after that.

"I obviously didn't expect to feel quite this sore," Danks said. "I've never had this, so I didn't know what to expect. I was hoping to bounce back a little better than I have.

"Hopefully I will be well enough to throw a side (Friday) and go from there. Who knows? If I can't throw a side, then who knows?"

As far as Danks pitching Monday for the Sox in the big cross-town series with the Cubs, that now seems like a long shot at best.

"I'm champing at the bit to get out there, but if I can't give us a chance to win, I'm not going to go out there (just) because I can," Danks said. "I want to give us a chance to win. I'd be hurting myself and the team."

Manager Robin Ventura wasn't ruling out Danks returning against the Cubs just yet.

"You send him back out to get his feel after another one," Ventura said. "I just want him to be as healthy as he possibly can be before he goes out there, and that's the first thing."
