With Floyd Mayweather persisting in staying "retired", a void is left at the top of the sport. Most would have you believe that superstar Manny Pacquiao solidified his claim to best fighter in the world with his demolition of De La Hoya, but are they right?
Maybe not.
Here are 5 fighters not named Manny Pacquiao who have a legitimate case for being the Pound for Pound King of Boxing (as long as Mayweather is retired, that is...)
1. Juan Manuel Marquez
Marquez is the best boxier not name Floyd Mayweather. He's a smart fighter with great skills and he's stood toe-to-toe with the currently recognized P4P king. In fact, many boxing aficionados thought he at least won one of the fights, if not both. Still, his claim to top dog could go down in flames as soon as he steps in the right with Houston's Juan Diaz.
2. Chad Dawson
You wanna see a guy with talent oozing out of his eyeballs? Check out Chad Dawson. Dawson, the king of Light Heavyweight division, has power in both hands and speed to kill. He's technically solid (if not spectacular) and has already Beaton the likes of Antonio Tarver and Glenn Johnson. Let's put it this way: Dawson is the real reason Joe Calzaghe retired.
3. Ricky Hatton
Ricky Hatton is the best pressure fighter in the business. He's proficient defensively, knows how to jab out of the clinch and has only lost to the best. Hatton is top dog at 140 lbs and don't be surprised to see him out hustle Pacman in their scheduled May 2 clash. Simply put, there is only one Ricky Hatton.
4. Israel Vazquez
Israel Vazquez has never met a fighter he couldn't beat, provided he got a 2nd shot at it if he couldn't get it done the first time. He's resilient and throws big punches at big times. He's a crowd favorite and his three fights with fellow star Rafael Marquez are some of the best fights ever.
5. Bernard Hopkins
Legendary champion Hopkins, or the other reason Joe Calzaghe retired, is a wonder to behold. He seems to get better with age, even foregoing his less-than-exciting style to actually throw some punches against his last foe. Hopkins is truly an all-time great, a throwback to a better time and a world class fighter.
So there you have it. Five fighters with a legitimate beef against those who cast doubts on their supremacy. But here's a nugget of truth for you, Manny Pacquiao, at least for now, deserves to be called the Pound for Pound King.
At least until May 2...
