Whoever said that AJ Burnett couldn’t pitch should be putting their foot back in their mouth, as he could very well win the NL CY Young this season.
I have always been a Burnett fan since his days with the Florida Marlins; so I was thrilled when the Yankees signed him in 2009 and went on to win the World Series that season.
Burnett had his ups and downs for sure, but Yankee fans had him pinned on the dartboard from the moment he arrived.
When the Yankees packed his bags for Pittsburgh at the beginning of this season, I was one fan who thought it was a HUGE mistake; and now he is proving just how bad a decision it was.
Sure, Burnett obviously needed a new environment and he has gotten that playing for the Pirates but can you imagine how good the Yankees would be if the fans had given him a chance here?
Burnett was just named NL Player of the Week for period ending August 5th.

A.J. Burnett has been named the NL Player of the Week, after throwing two great starts last week. Burnett started with a complete game, one-hit shutout against the Chicago Cubs, striking out eight and walking two in the process. The right-hander carried a no-hitter in to the eight inning, before giving up a two-out single on a 3-2 pitch to Adrian Cardenas.

A.J. Burnett took the mound at 84 pitches in the ninth inning at Great American Ball Park looking to notch his second straight complete game for Pittsburgh. Not since April 12 against the Phillies and April 17 against the Mets in 2005 had Burnett tossed back-to-back complete games.

Yesterday the Reds snapped a 5-game winning streak by losing to the Pirates, 6-2.
