Whoever said that AJ Burnett couldn’t pitch should be putting their foot back in their mouth, as he could very well win the NL CY Young this season.
I have always been a Burnett fan since his days with the Florida Marlins; so I was thrilled when the Yankees signed him in 2009 and went on to win the World Series that season.
Burnett had his ups and downs for sure, but Yankee fans had him pinned on the dartboard from the moment he arrived.
When the Yankees packed his bags for Pittsburgh at the beginning of this season, I was one fan who thought it was a HUGE mistake; and now he is proving just how bad a decision it was.
Sure, Burnett obviously needed a new environment and he has gotten that playing for the Pirates but can you imagine how good the Yankees would be if the fans had given him a chance here?
Burnett was just named NL Player of the Week for period ending August 5th.
Here are his 2012 stats thus far (stats courtesy of MLB.com):

A.J. Burnett's amazing success
For most of A.J. Burnett's tenure with the Yankees, fans of that team usually called him some variation of A.J. "Freakin." Burnett. That team's fan base were so so frustrated so often that many ringing cheers rang out upon the trade of Burnett to the Pittsburgh Pirates on February 19 of this year. Those fans did not care that the Yankees agreed to pay a lot of Burnett...
A.J. Burnett Named NL Player of the Week
A.J. Burnett has been named the NL Player of the Week, after throwing two great starts last week. Burnett started with a complete game, one-hit shutout against the Chicago Cubs, striking out eight and walking two in the process. The right-hander carried a no-hitter in to the eight inning, before giving up a two-out single on a 3-2 pitch to Adrian Cardenas.

Yankeetorial: OK, all you AJ Burnett bashers, let's celebrate the magic that is Diego Moreno and Exicardo Cayones
AJ Burnett is killing for Pittsburgh. This weekend, he went 8 2/3 innings to beat Cinncinati, keeping the Pirates afloat in the race. He's 14 and 3. We're paying much of his salary. But cheer up, AJ critics: We didn't just trade him for refried beans. We got Diego Moreno and Exicardo Cayones. And because you were so happy about that trade - REMEMBER HOW DELIGHTED...

Pirates Notebook: Burnett Throws Another Gem; McCutchen, Walker Tie Career Highs in Homers
A.J. Burnett took the mound at 84 pitches in the ninth inning at Great American Ball Park looking to notch his second straight complete game for Pittsburgh. Not since April 12 against the Phillies and April 17 against the Mets in 2005 had Burnett tossed back-to-back complete games.

Burnett dominates in Cin City finale, 4.5 games back
The weekend matchup with the hottest team of all time had the interest of everyone already on the Buccos’ bandwagon and those looking to join. A sweep by the Bucs would have brought on full-fledged Pirate Fever and a sweep the other way would have given the bandwagon a severe case of Oregon Trail dysentery. Anything in between and we’d get to continue the pennant race that...

Game 107: Pirates 6 Reds 2
This is what the Pirates needed. After AJ Burnett struggled in the first inning and gave the Reds a 1-0 lead, things seemed pretty bad. Two straight losses, an early deficit, a ton of pitches for Burnett in the first ... I said before the game that a sweep wouldn't have been the end of the world and I'll stay by that assessment, but I'll also say that it would've...

AJ Burnett pitched another gem, just one out away from being a complete game. The Pirates’ offense woke up, and the final game belonged to them as they won, 6-2. AJ struggled a bit in the 1st inning. He started off the inning with a flyout, but a walk to Drew Stubbs and a double [...]

Last Game
Yesterday the Reds snapped a 5-game winning streak by losing to the Pirates, 6-2. Reds’ starting pitcher Homer Bailey was quite hittable in his 4-run, 4.2-innings, while Pirates’ starting pitcher AJ Burnett was really on his game. You might also reasonably mention that Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips are still out, and that with them in the line-up we might be looking...
