Watching last nights game got me thinking, when did the Intentional Walk become all the rage? During the entire 162 game regular season the St. Louis Cardinals intentionally walked a total of 44 batters while the Texas Rangers intentionally walked just 21. The intentional walk is something normally reserved for a special occasion, like the pitcher is coming up next, or the winning run is on 2nd in the 9th inning and you want to set up a force play. Last night alone the two teams combined for a total of 6 intentional walks and instead of strategy it just seemed like the casual thing to do. In some cases these walks backfired and in some cases they were completely befuddling. The Rangers decided, **** it, we're not pitching to Albert Pujols in any scenario. Hell we're not even going to pitch to him with 2 outs and no one on. Conveniently for Ron Washington, of the three times they intentionally walked Pujols the only time Holliday didn't do something horrific, li...

Pujols receives congratulatory call from Reggie

A day after Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols became the third player in Major League Baseball history to hit three homers in a World Series game, he said he spoke on the phone to the last giant who did it: Reggie Jackson.

The Best Game 6 Offensive Performances of All-Time

Last Saturday night, Albert Pujols treated us to an unparalleled display of power.  His 5-for-6 performance, which included three home runs, six RBI, and 14 total bases, produced a RE24 of 5.808, the highest in World Series history. To help pass the time until tomorrow night’s game, I thought that it would be interesting to examine the best Game Six offensive performances in World...

Albert’s Call

Albert Pujols did call the hit and run play in the seventh. Cards manager Tony La Russa opened his press conference today by defending Albert Pujols, who called for a failed hit-and-run on his own in the seventh inning of the team’s 4-2 loss in Game 5. “That player gets a lot of leeway and ability to be involved based on how he reads what’s going on. Albert has...

Defending Intentional Walks

I am no fan of the intentional walk. Not only is it usually poor strategy (there are very few situations when it is even a good play to give Albert Pujols a free pass), but I also tend to agree with those who think that the intentional walk is contrary to the “spirit of the game.” There are some interesting suggestions out there on how it might be “banned”...

La Russa has long molded Cardinals in his image

Albert Pujols' pending free-agency isn't the only franchise-changing negotiation awaiting the St. Louis Cardinals once the World Series concludes. Manager Tony La Russa is also on the docket regarding a 17th year on the Cardinals' bench. He and the organization hold a mutual option for next season on a deal signed a little more than a year ago.

The Question of Prince Fielder...

As we inch closer to the end of the World Series and the official start of the off-season, we all know the Orioles need to plug in several holes. Whether the team gets that accomplished this winter, or in the years to come -- who knows; however, a lot of fans already have dreams of seeing Price Fielder or Albert Pujols in the black and orange. I see neither happening. In fact...

Bewildering 'mixups' totally out of character for La Russa

The decisions in the late innings are puzzling. The explanations for them are perplexing. Danny Knobler says Albert Pujols' hit-and-run call and Bullpen-gate are stunning to see under a manager of Tony La Russa's reputation.
