Mariners Pitchers and Catchers reported to camp yesterday and Spring Training is just around the way.  Most teams report back next week and there’s much to be excited about.  To borrow from David O’brien at the Atlanta Journal Constitution, who writes the best Braves blog out there: “The one thing that’s notably different about baseball spring training and other pro sports. Unlike an NFL or NBA training camp, most baseball players want to be there and don’t mind saying so. Baseball teams, with 6-7 weeks to train together in the February and March sunshine of Florida or Arizona, don’t generally work at a frenetic pace. The crack of the bat and the comforting sound of the ball hitting leather, nearly constant during a spring training day. The dew on the perfectly manicured ball fields. The aroma of coffee colliding at 8 a.m. (or earlier) with the smells of pine tar, chewing tobacco and an occasional cigar. Later, the smell of brats and BBQ from grills beneath the sta...

MLB Predictions: Breaking Down the 2012 Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves were a playoff team in 2011 until the final day of the season when they lost to the Philadelphia Phillies then were eliminated by the St Louis Cardinals in a one game playoff. After having a 9 1/2 game lead for the Wild Card on August 25th, the Braves blew their lead. There was good news for Atlanta though. Craig Kimbrel emerged as a closer and won the Rookie of...

Kimbrel is ready to go full speed ahead

If you think Craig Kimbrel will be affected by the events of Sept. 28, 2011, dont worry. He has a closers mentality. He lives moment-by-moment, pitch-by-pitch, inch-by-inch, mph-by-mph. What happens one day wont affect tomorrow. Thats the mindset you have to have as a closer, when you pitch on the edge, when one misplaced fastball can result in a win or a save or a loss. Kimbrel...

Shooting Into the Dark: An Update on Tim Hudson

I have not written much about Tim Hudson this offseason, primarily because of the lack of information available. After the regular season ended last October, Hudson underwent surgery on his back in November. The surgery was to fix a herniated disk in his back. The surgery was successful and everything seems to point to him being able to return to form in 2012. The question is...

Braves Boast Deepest Pitching Staff in Baseball

By Kent Covington For a second consecutive season, the Braves head into spring training uncertain of who their fifth starter will be.  For some teams, this could be a problem. It could be an indication that a team possesses no more than 3 or 4 quality starters and must head to camp hoping some AAA journeyman or mid-level prospect will pleasantly surprise and lay claim to the job...

Exploring DOM, Atlanta's pitching stat of choice

Today at Georgia Tech, Braves GM Frank Wren and Scouting Director John Coppolella were giving a guest lecture in a sports analytics class. The lecture gave an inside look into the Braves operations, and some of their analytical tools. Nothing too note-worthy came out of it, aside from the fact that the Braves use a stat called DOM to evaluate pitchers. DOM is thought of by the organization...

Player Profile #54: Michael Bourn | OF | ATL

Michael Bourn is about as sure a thing as you can get in fantasy sports. You know you’re getting 50+ steals along with at least a .270 batting average, .340 on-base percentage and 90 runs aka Brett Gardner last year. Now that he’s on the Braves, you can probably tack on about 10 more runs and that .270 batting average is an absolute floor — he’s hit over...

Delivery adjusted, Hanson no longer hits pause

Tommy Hanson was hesitant when Braves Minor League physical therapist Troy Jones suggested that he alter his awkward delivery. But after thinking about it for a couple months, Hanson returned to Turner Field during the early days of January and told pitching coach Roger McDowell that he wanted to make the change.

Braves pitching staff will take them deep

A roster of outstanding starting pitching should allow the Atlanta Braves to be well positioned for a run at the National League East title.

Baseball playing with local emotions

From Star News Online Baseball in Wilmington would get a drastic makeover if the city can reach a deal to build a new stadium and bring in a minor league franchise from the Atlanta Braves. Those in the athletic department at UNCW are waiting with tempered excitement, scrutinizing the potential a new stadium could bring to its already successful baseball program. ^^^ The Wilmington...
