Despite reports to the contrary over the weekend, the Tampa Bay Rays do not currently have any plans to promote top prospect Wil Myers. Many around Major League Baseball have thought the 22-year-old outfielder has been ready for the big leagues for well over a year, and speculation has run rampant that he’s on the verge of getting the call. But, according to our sources and reports over the past two days, that isn’t close to happening. The simple reason for Myers not being called up, is that there’s just no place for him on the team right now. The Rays currently have Kelly Johnson, Matt Joyce and Ben Zobrist doing well at the corner outfield spots, while Luke Scott is the team’s full-time designated hitter. Myers simply don’t have a place to play, so the Rays would rather he continue to be in the lineup every day and develop at Triple-A. Myers is currently hitting .286, with a .359 on-base percentage, while slugging .515. He has 12 home runs and 52 RBIs in 57 games this season for the Durham Bulls. The Rays received Myers as the centerpiece of a trade that sent James Shields and Wade Davis to the Kansas City Royals. Many thought he would open the season on Tampa Bay’s roster, but the team instead opted to keep him at Triple-A. MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo ranks Myers as the fourth-best prospect in all of baseball. The real reason the Rays are keeping Myers in the minors is because of money. If they bring him up too soon, he’ll qualify for “Super Two” status. Which means after two-plus seasons in the big leagues he could become arbitration-eligible a full year early. That would obviously be a big hit to the Rays financially. While I believe Myers is ready for the show, it will likely be at least a month or two before he makes his big-league debut.
